I can honestly say that while at times, Professor Ferris may have missed some key concepts, and even class time, he made what I did learn very entertaining. He was very approachable, and when spoken to outside of the classroom, was a great resource of knowledge. I feel like he had dumbed down many of his classes for students less capable.

Comment:

This was how he explained OOP: he presented a problem where OOP was the obvious solution, then as each group presented a (in his mind) wrong solution, he gleefully ripped them to shreds. He knew our group would get it right, so he called on us last. Only reason I knew? I studied the material ahead of time so I would not have to lean it from him.

Comment:

Really good teacher, can be kind of edgy but overall he means well. Very knowledgable in his coursework and does a pretty good job explaining topics. Emphasizes importance of specific points and makes clear and understandable lectures. Projects are sometimes difficult but he goes over similar examples in class and is willing help.

I had this guy probably 5 times while I got my BS. He is a very nice person, but a HORRIBLE professor. He just doesn't seem to have what it takes to be a professor. If you have a good background of the material prior to class you will be okay. If you are knew to this stuff, best of luck to you. He is one of the worst teachers I've ever had

Most people who don't like professor Ferris just shouldn't be involved in CS. He is very clear, and very helpful! I graduate in about a week and I cannot even begin to describe all the times hes helped me as a professor, advisor, or person. He is knowledgable and sometimes difficult, but always willing to help. A great professor and a great person!

I dont understand why students have problems with Prof. Ferris, he may come off edgy at times, but he is a really nice guy and willing to help you and even rearrange office hours for you. His classes and workload are sometimes alot, but he gives you help in class and extra time if needed. As long as you go to class and pay attention a B is easy.

Avoid taking classes from him if possible. He is not at all helpful, when asked for help he usually just tells you that you should already know it. His materials (lectures, PowerPoint, exams) are not original, except his horrible duck program analogies. It looks like he wrote the positive reviews himself I never heard anyone describe him as such.

No complaints. He's a nice guy, knows and explains the material well, and is available and very approachable if you need any help. I have respect for any professor who meets these three qualities.

Did he write the last column himself? He is the worst teacher for comp sci. He just gives us assignments and never tells us how to do them. If we ask for help, he just tells us to figure it out. He sucks...try to avoid.
