Forget taking lab with him. If you ask for help get ready to be blown off because he will simply not show you how or why you are wrong on answers to questions. When he explains the lab procedures, forget about the clarity of his instructions. Also the field trips were pointless. Do not take period.

I had Dr. Hansen for both GEMS 157 and GES 111 at the same time. Although he is a very nice person and is passionate about what he teaches, he is not the best professor I have had. His exams and quizzes for both classes were extremely difficult and detail oriented, and the study guides did not help at all. He moves through lectures very quickly too

Really kind and passionate guy, however, horrible class. He gives you a study guide that doesnt even follow the powerpoints. You struggle to understand which question youre on because its so disorganized. Quizzes are hard and so are the assignments. Please avoid.

Nice guy but really tough class for a gen-ed. He jams a lot of material down your throat through lecturing the entire period. Exams were very difficult. Textbook was completely unnecessary. Would look elsewhere if this isn't your major.

I loved Dr. Hansen. He is the kind of professor that will truly make you work hard. He does want you to succeed but he also wants you to learn. If you are confused on something your best bet is to visit with him in his office one on one. No multiple choice on tests - pretty much all short answer. However, the classwork makes up most of your grade.

There was haphazard presentation of material, horrific organization of content, confusing slides, inconsistent tests (literally different material on different people's tests), inconsistent answers to questions. I was very displeased with this course and Professor Hansen as the instructor. Coming from an A student- do not take this course.

Professor Hansen means well, but this was NOT a good situation. Test were unbelievably(!!!!) hard (the tests were not all the same, some people had completely different questions), and his lectures were unclear, unorganized, and very hard to follow. The book is entirely unnecessary. Save yourself and do NOT take this class.

Comment:
Absolutely horrid at explaining class material. Made us purchase the new textbook, when notes were derived from the old issue. Labs and class notes did not correlate at all. For a GEMS course, there was simply too much material on exams. When asking for help, he did not explain things clearly. Brilliant man, too brilliant to be teaching this class.

DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE!!!! Before taking it i was in love with geology and truly enjoyed all of its facets. After taking this course I do not wanna do anything remotely related to geology. This professor gave EXTREMELY difficult tests which were NOT FAIR. You may see reviews on here and think they arent true but Im being 100% honest with you.

Very passionate about the topics covered in class. He taught tag-team style with Prof Tom Bultman, Hansen was far better. Kept me amused with his Hunger Games jokes/references.

This class is easily the best class I've had at Hope. Doc's passion for what he teaches really shows. His related well with the entire class and would readjust his teaching if he felt we didn't understand. Also, his ability to tell jokes throughout the class and participate in our jokes was amazing and greatly appreciated.

He is hilarious take his class. He lit up a cigar in class and had his secratary hiding somewhere in class waiting for a signal. When he said it she ran out and doused him with a bucket of water and he then went right back to teaching while soaking wet. So, he is funny.

Kinda reminds me of Bill Nye the Science Guy...definetly exploded a bottle of Pepsi in class all over my area of the class room, and spilled his marbles (litterally) all over the floor (on two seperate occasions!). Class is always unpredictable, amusing.
