Comment:
The class is only 5 programming projects each worth 20% and he gives you large chunks of code but the last couple of projects are nearly impossible to complete in their entirety and getting help from Brown feels more like being ridiculed by him.

The only professor I've ever had who was openly mocked by other professors in the department. He's that bad.

Personally, I thought this was a pretty easy class. At first, it was pretty tough adjusting to Scheme, but you end up learning enough to get through it. There's no final, just 5 main projects, which aren't impossible. Plus, he's a pretty easy grader (or at least the grader was!). Not a class to be afraid of. I got an A, like most others.

This class was a waste of my time. Scheme is useless and he spent the whole semester teaching only Scheme even though this class was supposed to be about several programming languages.

Very confusing lectures. Material is taught like you know everything about programming. Does not care much about students. Tests are extremely difficult( exam #1 avg 57%). Actual programming labs are fun and teach way better than lectures.

Cares very little about teaching anymore and doesn't try to make thing interesting. Hard to approach and is usually unhelpful when questions are asked. His notes are horrible and the book isn't as useful if you don't have a initial understanding from his bad lecture in the first place. Avoid Frank if possible. His classes aren't worth it.

Unbelievably boring, gets frustrated with poor class participation, berates the class for not answering him, etc. Shows up late, looking like he just got out of bed. Doesn't seem to care about teaching.

Comment:
Class was boring. Often had trouble staying awake. Eventually, stopped going to class. Managed to take a B away from it. Worked my ass of on the projects. If you want an A you need to read the book and go to every class. Dr. Brown may know his stuff, but the material became so uninteresting to me that I didn't care.

He is a great pool of knowledge. It is upto the student to learn in his classes. You can get an 'A' if you show up to class. If you really want to learn the material dont be hesitant to ask any questions. Sometimes he flies over the material, and assumes you already know some theorems that were taught prev. He is a great teacher and fun to talk to.

Makes class uneccesarily boring. I didn't really learn anything, and I even quit going to class because it didn't benefit me. He seemed very disorganized and like he didn't really care about the class.

Brilliant man, but not the best communicator. Very passionate about the subject matter and very willing to help, especially if you're persistent. A lot of people are afraid of him, especially those who can't hack it.

The class does not teach what the course descriptions says it should. Average grade on his tests was an F, and this did not bother him. Why have a class entitled Programming Languages if only one programming language is used?

Lacks ability to work with students in small groups (lacks social abilities). Knows his stuff like you wouldn't believe! But his ability of conveying the knowledge is poor. I'm sure he's a great person inside... Thunk about it (Scheme joke).

This is the worst professor at the University of Kansas. He is crazy about scheme, which says enough about him already. If there is anyway to avoid taking a class with this guy, do it!!!
