Comment:

This is one of the toughest classes I've ever taken. Granted, I don't have a business or economics background and am in a MBA program so I am not familiar with the concepts. Jack expects a lot and he will let you know it. Nevertheless, he is fair. He respects students who do the work and are prepared. period. If you ask for help, he'll help.

He's a really good teacher who knows his stuff. Attendance is mandatory on group project days, you can only miss 2. Exams will gauge your understanding, if you barely get it you'll get a C, if you really really get it you can expect an A. 1 Homework do each week. You will need to work for an A, but it is very manageable.

Comment:

Great professor! One midterm, one final, homework from textbook almost every week, and little group projects. With the same group all semester, you study current conditions in East Asian countries and submit a short report on it every week. This really helps you understand & apply the material covered in class. Not hard at all & learned a lot!!

He makes you apply what you learn instead of just giving you a study guide with the answers on it. There are 2 reports on an asian country you choose from a list. The final is way harder than the midterm because it's cumulative and he sort of curves grades. Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you don't show up you might not get what's going on.

Comment:

One of the hardest classes I ever took in Shidler. Hours and hours of homework. Project was graded super strict. Exams had nothing to do with lectures or homeworks. Has a filthy mouth and won't conform. Wouldn't take this class cause its a really hard class. He never uses powerpoints, only overhead displays which no one uses anymore. I regret it.

Tough but fair. He does not tolerate extraneous BS but wants a clear well though out answer. He also loves students to push back and argue with him, this is why many people complain about his attitude or being belittled. When you write papers include a clear thesis and supporting statments do not beat around the bush but go straight to the point.

He is a senior citizen that acts like a 9 year old girl. Holds grudges and has a huge attitude. It is a shame that he teaches classes with such interesting content. He lets his own ego get in the way of the class. Avoid his class at all costs.

Jack is aggressive and tough. He's an excellent professor, but be prepared. He has high expectations and will come down on you if you slack off or make inane comments (OMG no, oil rigs are NOT an example of offshoring!). Show respect, do the work, and don't be afraid to ask for help, but put in a serious effort first because you will not fool him.

Comment:

Bus 313 with Suyderhoud made me feel like I was taking a grad school economic class. For a general business class he goes way too much into detail and expects too much out of his students. He also talks back to students in front of the lecture. 1/2 the people stopped attending class because no one can comprehend him. The curve was also a D.

This is a mean teacher, who is unfair. And he expects you to know and understand economics just as well as he does, for the exams. He is like a hundred years old, so that's not fair. If you really want a b.s. class and want to get a really bad grade, no matter how much you study, take this class.

this teacher is tough. he doesn't make a lot of sense. he does have an attitude. lets you bring sheet of notes to texts quizes, if you only understood. he grades tough. expects you to do excellent. 1/2 class doesnt come and the avg grade is under 70%. gpa killer

He only teaches in the Spring for Bus. 313 - which is a shame for fall students. Another prof. substituted for Prof. Suyderhoud one day - it was not pleasurable. Prof. Suyderhoud teaches everything in layman's terms. If you want to learn, take this guy. A++

A little abrasive but overall one of the best prof's you'll ever find; intelligent, teaches well, supportive, personable, and grades in a very fair way. To get on his better side, you'll need to convince him you're an academic equal so this means a lot of studying and just to generally know what you're talking about.

A+++ Who said he isn't helpful. I ask for sample questions for the final. And he made some, he went up to me every other class to ask if I got his emails, sample exams etc. Sometimes his stuff doesn't go through so he used me as a check to make sure everything's alright. He is the most brilliant econ professor at UH and his class is not too hard.

Tough teacher. You need to be prepared for class or he'll pounce. That said, you know what to expect. Tests and homework were fair, but not easy. Lectures usually interesting. You'll learn a lot, but you have to work for it. Can be abrasive and intimidating in class.

He explains the economic concepts very well and you SHOULD be able to come away with a good understanding of the material. Cases and lectures are interesting. He may come across a little terse in the beginning but his bark is worse than his bite. Jack's pretty cool overall.
