Comment:
This is a pretty neat class, and Doyle is a brilliant professor. The labs are tough, so it's important to make the most of lab time. If you organize your notes well and do his study questions, there is no reason not to ace the lecture exams. He gives really detailed answers to student's questions.

Terrible instructor. Formats class in a ridiculous way. Tests are open note, but in lab you have to memorize dozens of near identical plants and every characteristic about them. Isn't clear about what he wants, grades harshly. Course is a mess.

Doyle is simply amazing! Had no itnerest in plants before this, now I love them. The labs are tough so study hard, and use picture from lab to help study!! Prepare for the lecture exams by organizing notes-they are open book/notes. Use lab time, it will really help in the end...cutting out early will put you in trouble!

He is a good teacher and very passionate about what he does, just sit in front so you don't fall asleep...really....it's difficult. Go to the greenhouses and study with Ernesto. It's a really good way to make what you're learning tangible.

Had him for the plant section of the 2c series. Was the hardest of the three; harder to understand topic, harder tests. Only one who didn't give clicker questions.

He likes to joke a lot, he's funny sometimes. Overall, make sure to take good notes b/c his tests are all based on his lecture notes. All exams are open book, be sure to at least tab your notes and you'll do fine. lab is very tiring, there's a quiz once in a while but it's a breeze if you study for it. Jessica was our TA, she's really helpful.

Comment:
Dry lecture so you should be relatively interested. Midterms are a piece of cake if you go to lecture and take down good notes because midterm & final are open book & notes. However, the lab required memorization which may ruin your grade since you usually don't memorize for lecture and end up memorizing for lab. All in all, it was an okay class.

I like him as a person, he's quirky and a little odd. But unless you like fossilized plants A LOT, I mean, really like and not just interested, then don't take this class. He's an average teacher who sometimes emphasizes the wrong things and then blindsides u on a midterm.
