He was amazing. I am really surprised about the negative reviews. I had a class size of about 12-14 artists and we all LOVED his class, so much so that we all took him again the next year. He is definitely a teacher that expects you to work, but if you show effort and reasons/discussion of your art pieces you'll be fine. Favorite professor by far

Comment:

The only explanation I can fathom for why James Kuiper has received any bad scores at all is that the student had a very shallow understanding of art to begin with. No, Kuiper does not teach you everything about draftsmanship; Instead, he inspires passion for the arts and encourages self-discovery. If he's not a good teacher, I don't know who is.

Definitely the least inspirational art class I have ever taken. None of the work I produced felt rewarding. More emphasis on tacking an explanation to a work to call it "art" than utilizing technical skill. Constant political opinions were also a huge turnoff. Inadequate adviser, didn't seem to care about students graduating in a timely manner.

Comment:

Kuiper is one of the best professor's I've had in art. This is the only class I've taken that really challenges you in thinking rather than simply drawing. But his method has its own drawback, it can be misleading/confusing at times. My only complaint is that he should grade each assignment on the due date rather than waiting till end of semester.

I have artistic talent and wanted to be an elementary/art school teacher. His class caused me to change majors. He was vague, discouraging, and condescending. I am now a professional who is also a successful artist despite him.

Kuiper is awesome!! Tough grader, and can be hard to read. He gives very vague instructions for projects, but makes them fun. Easy to talk to. He really loves what he does and sincerely cares about his students being successful. Great guy. I really enjoyed his 2D Design class! Take it!!

hard class, I don't have natural talent worked my ass of and got a B-. He is one of my favorite professors, if you ask he is willing to help and you don't have to be a natural as long as he can tell you try. Funny, and can have intellectual convos with students outside of art class, about other topics. Passionate about art, and it shows. Loved him

kuiper is a nice guy but as a teacher he really just stinks, he's too self interested to realize students need more guidence in his assignments to live up to his super high standards. his critiques and grading do not encourage students to work hard. in short: he is vague, picky, pretty useless as a resource and he's very into himself.

Ruined art for me. Doesn't teach anything and his critiques are unhelpful. He even made a blonde joke about me in front of the whole class because I asked a question about an assignment. Horrible. Do not take him.

such a great professor! if you are willing to put the time and effort into the class. he makes you work and it really pays off. he really pushes you to expand your ideas and think outside of the box, but YOU really have to want to make art... any class is a great class

Worst class of my life. In short, he has ruined art for me. I now hate artists and don't wish to ever talk to one again. He's full of incomprehensible critiques that are based upon nothing and have no effect on anything. Do not take this his class unless you think throwing paint at a wall and smearing floor wax and random chemicals on it is "art".

Definitely one of the worst classes I've ever taken. He is quite biased towards natural talent. He's completely unavailable during office hours, he rarely gives specific instructions, and you have to work incredibly hard to get anything above a C. I put in as much time as all my other classes combined, all for a B:1st non-A in over 4 years. Avoid!

He loves telling stories about himself, his sons and rich people he knows. He instructed me to research artists I already knew. He was little help. I've had better. He was too demanding. He did not give any supplies for the art fee we all pay. I could have accomplished the same if I painted on my own.

Prof Kuiper is one of the most amazing teachers I have had at this university. He is challenging, intelligent and funny. My entire perspective of art has changed since the classes I have taken with him. He asks important questions about your work and helps you understand why you make art and what it means. I loved his Advanced Painting Class

An oddball teacher. I took this class and three months later I just stopped going. His assignments are DUMB! Who wants to spend 6 hours drawing an egg? I was an advanced student taking this class for fun...This guy drove me crazy, I've had MANY art teachers before, he was one of the worst.
