Very difficult class. MacKey knows everything about stars, but doesn't know how to get it out. Do not take this class, the only reason I got a B was because of all of the extra credit and knowing some from high school.

If you wanted an easy Gen Ed., this class is not for you. I was a straight A student in high school with a B here and there. I had to drop this class because I was worried I would fail and have to take it again. I have never worked so hard to keep my head above water than in this class, but I sank.

While Mackey knows his material, he no longer really knows how to communicate it. He assumes that once he has said it, you understand it thoroughly. While he is helpful when you go to his office, you still need to dig for that understanding. He as an individual is entertaining and fun though!

Im an electrical engineer and had mackey for both sections of engineering physics. They were brutally hard and I worked my butt off, but I got an A both times. He doesnt care if you come to class, he is a ridiculously harsh grader (show all your work meticulously). I used the book like crazy. The hw is worth a ton. Get a 100 on it. Good Luck.

If you're looking for an easy science Gen Ed, Astronomy is most definitley not it. This class is extremly hard. 4 tests, 1 project and 2 exercizes, Lessons that you must do on each of the 15 chapters,& 1 CUMULATIVE Final. He offers you over 2,000 bonus points, so it's easy to make up your grade for failing the tests if you want to go the extra mile

This class was very hard and a little ridiculous. Nobody in the class of about 50 got an A, and only about 5 scored above 80%. Most of the class had to drop. It would be a good class though if it wasn't that hard for a gen-ed.

I took Astronomy expecting an easy A. It was a lot harder than I thought. If you want to coast through your general ED science class don't take this. He is a great teacher though and knows what he's talking about. In hindsight I am glad I took it... but it was by no means a picnic.

Comment:

Applied Math (aka Mackey Math) was an excellent class. I learned a lot of math that I had never seen in any of the math department classes I've taken. Half of your grade is a homework grade so you have to do your homework which takes a lot of time, but it's worth it since if you can do the homework the tests are easy.

One of the best professors I have ever had. He pushes you to the limit;if you make it through his classes everything else is easy. I had him for Engineering Physics and for Circuits 1 and 2. My advice:Take his classes but do not get behind, if you do, you will not gain anything from his teaching.He does not believe in the no child left behind moto.

He REALLY knew his stuff. I think he taught over my head though. I didn't do well in his classes, but I think he was a good teacher. He always made me afraid to speak directly to him. Maybe it was the raised platform in the classroom? :)
