Comment:
Disappointed that I only had the experience of attending one of his courses. Wish I could have taken more because Jim is funny, down-to-earth, organized, and he provides excellent feedback that rips into your soul but then pats you on the back. I definitely would recommend taking classes with him as a professor.

One of the best at Chapman. A renowned, respected writer with a solid reputation. He's honest and doesn't sugarcoat, but tries hard to make each student a better writer. He has tons of interesting, hilarious stories, and if you're a surfer, talk surfing with him. Take him, even if you have no interest in writing.

Professor Blaylock's the best we've got. Clearly well-established in his field yet incredibly accessible. Gives valuable feedback and creates a safe yet honest environment for his students. His stories are top-notch, too. Take his courses whatever chance you get.

What ISN'T there to like about Blaylock? He is such a great professor with a great sense of humor. Thoughtful but not boring. Intelligent but not intimidating. He helped me break out of my shell my first year of grad school. He is so thoughtful when reading your work. Never shuts anyone's ideas down. I wish I could take him every semester.

He's a very nice guy and gives a lot of feedback on work. However, I don't think he's the best choice if you are doing anything experimental or off the grid. I found Nakell's classes a lot more worthwhile because of this. If you are doing something linear, Blaylock is the better choice. Non-linear, go with Nakell.

Required freshman comp isn't exactly fun, but Blaylock is a wonderful professor. He's a published writer with a solid reputation in the field, so he has a lot of interesting stories to share. Go to class once a week then you have a one-on-one meeting with him once a week. He gives great feedback and wants to help as much as possible. Take him.

His notes are very in-depth and it's obvious he takes the time to read your work and give it full attention. Recommend him for any and all writing classes at Chapman.

Having taken Jim Blaylock for several graduate workshop courses, I find him fabulous in almost every way. The best thing about him is that he understands that his way isn't the only way, so he doesn't make you conform to his style of writing or his way of thinking. Like I said, fabulous.

Awesome teacher. Loved coming to his class everyday, never got bored. All you need to do is come to class with the material read that he wants you to, a couple of essays, a couple of journals, two essay tests, and you are set. No other teacher compares.
