Comment:
Dr. Yong wrote the textbook he uses for Optimization (it's dense). While I'm absolutely certain he's well-respected and accomplished in research, the class was very painful at first. The first month was all theory, with some topology and analysis (which are not pre-reqs). Once we got into LM, KKT, and Simplex it was smoother sailing.

I feel I learned nothing in this class. You essentially just memorize some algorithms.

A challenging course, but if you truly put the work in, it is possible. I struggled a lot in the beginning, but I continued to do all the homework problems, and get help whenever I needed it. Take quizzes seriously, complete all assigned homework before exams and have a good attitude to learn. You will get the grade you deserve!

The worst professor Ive had in my entire life by far. Incredibly difficult to understand what he is saying, unclear explanations, and puts trick questions in very short test. Super bad professor.

THE hardest math class that I have ever taken. Grade is solely based on 3 tests, Final, and weekly quizzes. What makes it worse is that he chooses specifically hard and confusing questions over material that he covers poorly. WARNING: He will try to trick you if you don't know what you are doing. Take another instructor and avoid perpetual failure.

Not a great professor to take if you are not already confident in your calculus abilities. Exams are difficult and he will often choose very specific problems to test you on that he might have only gone over in class once. He was not very helpful in office hours, he expects you to learn on your own. Known to laugh at student's questions in class.

Takes attendance so go to class. I got lost often in his lectures. He knows his subject very well, but has a hard time explaining concepts. If you're ok with teaching yourself you'll pass. Just make sure you do the hw (optional) and understand it well. Weekly quizzes made life hard. Enough dropped grades to save you. Try to take someone else.

Dr. Yong is a very bland Calculus teacher. He has a fairly strong accent, making him difficult to understand especially when using technical math terminology. He expects you to work very hard and makes his exams and quizzes challenging to match, oftentimes difficult due to specifics rather than the overall concept. Tough class but fair grading.

Professor Yong is a little ruthless but he's also very straightforward about his expectations. The tests are challenging but they are not unfair. If you go to class, do his suggested homework problems, and actually listen to his lectures, there's no reason you cant get an A. He's just going to make you work for it, and he won't pity you if you dont

This guy is very smart. However he is possibly the worst teacher at ucf. I am a 3.75 student and put 40 hours of studying into each of my first two test for this class. Still ended up having to withdrawal. Going to his office hours proved to me he doesn't care about students. DON'T TAKE HIM, HE DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO TEACH OR EXPLAIN ANYTHING

if you were like me thinking calc2 was the most difficult well calc 3 is no cake walk. He's smart like SMART, relaying his knowledge to students not so much. He teaches from the textbook. If you read the text book it's basically identical to what he says in class 3tests final is 55% of grade. Tbh don't know how I passed maybe cuz so many dropped it

I was scared to take him after I read all of the reviews, but his class wasn't bad. His tests, including the final, were pretty straight forward and simple. He gives optional homework, which is good to do if you want to do well on tests and quizzes, but I stopped doing most of the homework and still did well on all of the tests.

Awful! He is a reputable in his field and has delivered a keynote address at an international conference. He could care less about his students and the department is scared to reprimand him at all. Says the quiztests will be on one thing and gives another. Likes to brag that he wrote questions none of the graduate students can pass on the quals.

Make sure to do all of the homework problems. Make sure you are prepared for quizzes, as tests are pretty hard. I actually got As on all the tests, but the final (worth 40% of your grade) was EXTREMELY difficult compared to the tests. Will not curve under any circumstances, even if literally 75% of the students fail the tests. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

This is the best course to take with Dr. Yong. He isn't clear about his expectations for tests, but they end up being okay. He drops some of the lower test grades, which is good, because you'll probably do poorly on some of them. He expects you to be studying as the class goes on, not right before tests.

Assumes you remember everything from Calc 2 and continues on with those concepts without revision. 90% of class failed first test, but he replaces lowest test with the final. Grab a study partner, put in lots of hours outside the class and do not leave any topic untouched. A is impossible, but manage a B and you'll realize what hard work really is.

He's a nice guy but he can't explain the concepts which help you pass the tests (your only grade!). His lectures and notes are very scattered, he doesn't emphasize what is critical for solving each type of problem. If you take him read your Calculus 2 textbook cover to cover because he puts lots of obscure integration techniques on the test.

Class is not impossible, but professor is. Makes the material way harder than it needs to be, and doesn't understand that the material is difficult. Can have a condescending attitude when you ask questions he feels are "trivial," doesn't explains concepts in an easily-graspable way. He does definitely know the material.
