I took Drawing 2 from Gee back in the late 90's and loved it even though I barely slept that semester due to the long hours spent drawing his massive colored pencil projects. Many people hated Gee, but they just didn't rise to the challenge that is a John Gee class. Hardest art class I've ever taken but so worth it!

My favorite professor all thru college. I like to think of him as "The Weeder". He tends to weed out the ones that aren't serious/can't hack it. He expects a lot out of his students and will let them know when they aren't cutting it. I took every drawing class I could w/him and loved all of them. He pushed me to be a better. Thank you Gee!

Wonderful Professor! One of my favorites! He works you hard and expects you to live up to his expectations! He motivated me to do my best and pushed me to improve my talent. LOVED this professor.

Honestly, most of the year i hated John Gee, but by the end of the year i respected him more than any other professor. He forced me to improve and get motivated or fail. In the end it is because of him that i got into my program, and he has my thanks for that.

I loved JPG! He made me work hard and got the best work out me. He doesn't care about your self-esteem, he cares about your work ethic. Sounds like his more recent students can't take his critiques. Shape up or ship out! I've been an art teacher now for 14 years, Thanks John Gee!

Most end up having a love hate relationship with him as he gives very truthful critiques, but he is very harsh. He barely helps students and just shoves them on his graduate students whom usually aren't mastering in drawing, so it's pretty much useless. I wish anyone good luck with him.

do not take a large load of other classes. you will need to dedicate most/all of your time. i have a love/hate for john gee. do not reveal anything about yourself that you dont want later used against you. Ie: if you're a photographer... he makes you master your technique but give him attitude or miss his class you get docked horribly.

Horribly negative professor. He will make or break you. I had to drop the class due to health issues with the lack of sleep I was getting by trying to complete the ridiculous amount of assigned projects. Be prepared to spend $200+ on art supplies for this class as well. I would reccommend finding out who your prof. is before signing up for classes.

he needs to relax on the criticism. yeah it's good to criticize constructively, but his way is a little to harsh when points you out in front of the whole class. really not helpful outside of class.

Regardless of what others may say, he is NOT a good teacher. The fact that you may learn and that he is a professor are entirely different. You learn through trial and error, being forced to do so or fail. It's that "sink or swim" mentality. DO NOT go in there without decent art background (some high school, at least) like I did. Bad idea...

He assigned an insane amout of work for a beginning course. I can't count the nights I got 0-3 hours of sleep because of this man! I had no social life whatsoever because I had too much drawing homework to do. He is very negative and inclined to yelling. I learned that I can overcome anything from his class, but with some minor emotional scarring.

Gee is the most unpleasent and difficult teacher I've ever had. The massive workloads and his constant negativity in class sucked most of the joy out of drawing for me. I ended the semester a total wreck solely because of his class.

He demands a lot of your free time for drawing, but its worth it. Some of my best work has come from his classes. And its quite entertaining to listen to some of his rants!
