Comment:
Professor Kevin is an amazing, inspirational professor. he is a hard-worker, and hopes to see the same in all his students. He has a sign in his classroom that states "you can't climb a ladder with your hands in your pockets." With hard work and studying from ALL the books, class notes of the grammar and vocab he teaches, you will succeed.

Struxness is a big book of information and knowledge. He knows this and can come off as arrogant or cold to students. Tests are long and REQUIRE you to actually read both the books and actually study hard. If you don't, there's no way you're gonna pass. Lectures in class are long and go off on random tangents with little moments of relevant info.

By FAR the worst professor I've ever had at Palomar. Constantly degrades students, outright tells them to drop his class if not performing well rather than encouraging them, talks about himself, full of self-righteousness. DO NOT waste your time and try and stick it out, drop as soon as possible and opt for another professor.

I loved Kevin. Im 16, so taking college classes is scary but he treated me like a normal student all the way up until the end when i told him myself how old i was. It was great to have a deaf teacher for my first ASL class. He WILL call you out & be very straight forward with you so dont get butthurt. Hes cool with absences as long as you emaik

Be ready to work hard. He is very blunt, so if you aren't good with criticism, don't take him. If you plan to continue to the interpreting program, I recommend taking him for every class possible. He has a great sense of humor and often incorporates it into his lectures. The ASL lab will be a very resourceful tool for you. Make sure you study.

Great professor for ASL 1. He will be strict, but gets the point across clearly. YOU MUST STUDY. As long as you study for quizzes and test, you would be able to get a B in the class. The minimal study of about 1-2 hours is enough to pass tests and quizzes. This is coming from a rather lazy student still in middle school.

Kevin is extremely smart and has extensive knowledge about both English and American Sign Language. His lectures are very detailed and include information about Deaf Culture. You must take notes, attend class, and commit to learning the language if you want to pass his class. He is very detail oriented which makes him a tough grader.

Kevin presents A LOT of information and expects you to work with classmates on your own time to internalize it. No other ASL teacher will teach you as much. If you are thinking about interpreting try to start with him early. He teaches more at every level than other ASL profs. If you only want language credit FIND A DIFFERENT TEACHER!

If you want to become an interpreter there is no better person to learn sign language from than someone who was born deaf. If you are looking for an easy teacher or to skim through 2nd language requirement, do not take him for an easy A. Hes really tough but you will learn a lot.

Professor Struxness makes you work for your grade, but he helps you succeed by correcting you and letting you work through your issues. Write down everything he writes on the board, and every correction he makes to the vocab book. He gives frequent quizzes but it helped me stay focused. If your goal is to be a fluent signer, definitely take him.

If you are passionate about ASL you should think about a different teacher . He is rude and thinks he is the best and that other teacher are wrong. He continues to make you feel stupid. I continue to feel so defeated when leaving his clas. Tests you on information he never even went over. Know this comes from a hardworking student who try's hard!

Great teacher for ASL 100 really helps you do the best you can. He does have lots of test and quizzes which I think help you know what you have to study for. He constantly checks if everyone understands his signs before moving on.

2 grammar quizzes, 3 tests, deaf event paper, 15 lab hours. Pretty much what the class was graded on. You need the text book and must come to class in order to take good notes. Very strict on grammar/ facial expression but it will truly help you in the future. You do a lot of signing in front of the class for practice.

This is the craziest professor you will ever come in contact with in your entire life! If you like being happy and not failing I'd recommend taking another teacher this guy is gnarly and he never stops talking about him self! No one cares how many classes you took in college

If you're not planning on being an interpreter do not take him. The 2 exams make up your entire grade, and there are a few 5 point quizzes. The quizzes require over 2 hours of studying just to even pass them, class average on them was consistently a D. Extremely difficult to pass.

He teaches as if everyone is planning on becoming interpreters. If you're serious about ASL, don't be afraid. I learned so much about ASL grammar! I took 3 years of ASL in high school and went straight into ASL 2 smoothly. Be warned there's a lot of studying (no real homework) and lectures. Not a lot of signing in class. Expect no class days off!!!

There is a midterm, final and small quizzes in between. If you want to pass this class you need to make sure your previous professors emphasize grammar, idioms, mouth morphemes, etc. If your professors have not emphasized these concepts at all you will fail. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR, WILL TELL YOU TO DO IT YOURSELF!

4 chapter quizzes and 2 grammar quizzes. Midterm and Final. Strict on facial grammar. Must attend a deaf event and write a short paper. 15 required hours in ASL lab on free time. Must attend class in order to take detailed notes. Quizzes and test contain info that he gives in class on specific signs. Have to work hard for your grade

Amazing professor. If you're going into into interpreting as a career, take him. If not, find an easier professor (Paulette is a good choice). You will study your butt off, and he is very picky about grammar. There is practically no homework, but you'll have to study a few hours a day if you want to pass the tests. He's tough, but not he's mean.
