Dr. De Alvarez is a brilliant man, but I detested his class. He was a fair grader, but his lectures were not engaging at all and the material was not clear. He knows his stuff, he just has trouble passing it on.

Comment:
A good professor, intelligent, great ideas. Although his voice may sound boring his lectures are actually very interesting in content. He tends to repeat himself -- he spent three class periods repeating himself on the topic of factions. Also, he is very difficult to pin down in terms of what he wants. Very harsh grader, unreasonable even.

I had 2 classes with Dr. De Alvarez WAY back in the 70s! Wow. I remember him as a young guy. He was a forgiving test grader. I was young and not enlightened. Even then, I could tell he was a thinker and a deep personality. I enjoyed his time. Being old now, he must be even older, I wish I could go back and sit in those lectures today.

I've been to three different universities for studies, and de Alvarez is by far the best professor one could hope for, and the best one could ask for. If you're lazy you will suffer poorly; if you're half intelligent you'll suffer well, and learn much a long the way.

The titan of the UD politics department. The man is a demigod. I don't know a single really bright student who doesn't worship him.

Very very smart man, knows his stuff well. however, his lectures are insanely boring, his ideas are chaotic and disorganized, and is never available for extra help (several e-mails unanswered, and missed several office hours). He is never clear on what is expected of you, so be ready to have papers and tests ripped apart

Quite the Struassian. If you think he is either boring or monotone then you're right. But then again, if you're looking for entertainment go to a state school or the movies. If you want to learn concepts and deep truths about political philosophy (not science) then be diligent about your studies; nothing worth doing comes easy.

I've had classes with Prof. de Alvarez since I was an undergrad in the early 90s up until I completed IPS course work in 2003. He's the best professor I've ever taken at UD (and as a UD lifer, I've taken quite a few). He has taught me how to read a Platonic dialogue. He's irreplaceable.

Dr. deAlvarez is the single best prof I ever had. Not only is he well organized and exciting, I learn something new everytime I go over my notes. His classes are a liberal arts education by themselves.

If you're stupid, he will seem boring. But he is one of the most thoughtful, penetrating, and subtle professors I've ever had. His command of the text is unparalleled.

At first, one has to get used to the monotone voice, seemingly disorganized lectures, and supposed boring content. After half of the semester, one realizes that he is an absolute genius. His words are so carefully chosen and very well woven. Very difficult lectures but comparatively easy tests. Write carefully and you will be fine.
