Honestly I stopped going to lectures after going for the first 2/3 of the semester was absolutely useless. His lecturing is so god awful and overly conceptual and he had no logical ordering in how he taught at all. The curve was huge but it's needed when the teacher teaches nothing. Just take MATH240 if you can

Has a very nice grading scale and gave a lot of extra credit, but he's just such a horrible lecturer that I can't recommend this class to anyone else. Exams were unpredictable and overly conceptual (though he did take it a bit easy on us on the final). Not sure how he gets such good reviews for other classes but do NOT take him for linalg

He does care about his students and hopes for everybody to pass, he has a fair grading scale although a little bit boring when it comes to lecturing. But a good teacher still.

his lecture is clear and i found it helpful for understand the textbook, especially when it comes to harder chapters (he gives the detail that the textbook skips and the textbook skips a lot ). He gives massive curve and easy exams when the average is low. fyi 410 is the kind of class u have to read and practice a lot by yourself .

He is a good professor and grades very leniently (you shouldn't get below a C). At the end of the semester, I honestly felt like I didn't learn much. Maybe cause his style is confusing and he would write a lot of stuff on the board not related to material. I'd still take him again. I thought he was nice and fair. Really nice handwriting too.

Comment:
Dr. Grillakis makes the course material very clear and easy to understand. His exams were easy and very straightforward, as were the MatLab assignments. You can tell he is passionate about this subject as he likes to explain other things (physics related) just for fun. Show up early and sit toward the front, he is quiet and begins 5-10 min early.

He is very clear about his grading criteria. exams are similar to practice exams and not very hard. there are 5 matlab projects which are easy and short.

His lectures are almost pointless to go to because he only talks about how equations are derived. If you are interested in learning that type kind of stuff, then take him. Either way, his tests are the easiest of all the teachers, and he is a nice guy.

Professor Grillakis is a good professor. Most of the exam problems follow homework problems but its good to go to lecture because he adds problems in which one will have to respond yes or no and why. Most of those problems are based on lecture content. Other than that he has a good grading scale, 86 is an A-. He is very calm, patient and exotic.

Dr. Grillakis is fairly quiet and mild-mannered, so don't expect to be entertained by his lectures. But his tests are easy and his instruction is pretty clear, with lots of examples and explanation.

We had to download files for the matlab project, but the links didn't work. When I emailed him asking about it he simply replied 'There is matlab tutoring available' completely ignoring my question and being useless.

He's a nice guy but has the world's thickest accent so no one can understand him. His microphone hardly ever works and he talks to the chalkboard the whole 50 minutes so even if you can understand him, chances are you won't be able to hear him. I loved calc 1 and 2 and now I dread going to class. The only grades are 4 exams and 4 mat labs.

Not particularly interesting, but he is a fair grader. Make sure you do the practice problems he hands out. Superior to many math professors I had at UMD. His syllabus was pretty balanced and I didn't feel like the class went to fast.

Comment:
Math410 is seriously overrated in terms of difficulty, especially if you take it with Grillakis. If you're taking it, you're a math major, and if you understand calculus and how to write a proof (which you learn from reading the book), then no issue. Do the homeworks, read the book, ace the tests, and you'll be fine.

Pretty good teacher. His lectures are clear, and presents proofs differently than textbook which is helpful. Homework was weighted heavily in the class, and he was willing to help in office hours. Exams were difficult but possible if you understand the homework. He had a large curve in my class.

Helpful professor and really a kind person. His lectures are straightforward though rather boring. Most of the time, you're better off practicing problems from the book. Tests are fine with a few days of prepation. No homework or quizzes so you have to be self-motivated to keep up with the material.

He's extremely approachable outside of class and will answer questions to the level of his students. That being said, if no questions are asked he will continue as if you understand the material perfectly (even when the proofs are difficult). Make sure to visit his office hours and you'll be fine.
