She teaches real-life lessons and if you spend the time outside of class and in her office hours, you will get the grade you believe you deserve. You will have to work hard in her class but in the end, you'll come out being a lot more inspired and wiser than before.

Makes you print out pages and pages of the textbook but then doesnt even have you look at them during class. Rude to students, and every class was just a waste a time because the majority of it was spent talking about her life story.

Mary is the best professor I have ever had, she is difficult but I highly suggest taking her. Everyone should take Mary at least once, she will challenge you in ways you haven't before but you come out a better person because of it. I struggled with the class but I did my work and got an A, you can too!

Mary is tough, yes but she's the best professor Longwood has. She's inspirational and her stories are inspiring. There are grad students who come back just to sit in her class and listen to her talk. She challenges you to think in ways you never have before. Every student should take one of her classes at least once at Longwood. Love Mary!

Apparently, being treated like third graders is the only thing that is allowed for college students. Being forced to put our phones on the whiteboard at the beginning of class instead of trusting us to keep them inside our bags like adults was one of the reasons I dropped the course.

This class is the closest one can get to hell without having to leave this mortal plane. HIDEOUSLY DIFFICULT grader and lectures digress into personal life ramblings incredibly often. One ends up either hating her and revering her and the people I know that fall into the latter strike me as never having an original thought in their life.

Unless you like your professors to lambaste you in front of your peers for a bad story and watching other students get their work torn apart, then I wouldn't recommend this class or this professor. Trust me, she is not worth having even once a week. She requires that all cell phones be put on the whiteboard in front of the classroom.

She is by far the most inspiring teacher at Longwood. I would never have gotten through some of the classes or days. I would long to go to her classes during the day. Literally you never knew what you got during the day. Her stories of herself and her past were enthusiastic. I highly recommend her over anyone.

Mary is wonderful! She is definitely my favorite professor so far. Her class takes some work, but she is willing to help you if you're willing to ask for it. Her classes are always very entertaining, I found myself wishing they wouldn't end. I learned so much. Highly recommended!

She means well, but misses the mark completely. She believes that grant writing is THE only skill that's important. She attempts to make class interesting by using her life stories, but ends up rambling instead. She will give constructive, but VERY BLUNT, in-your-face criticism of your writing. She is akin to a drill sergeant in her expectations.

Absolutely the best professor I have ever had, I love Mary to death and wish I had other classes to take with her. She is one if the most interesting people you will ever meet. She is by no means an easy teacher, but if you put forth effort, and ask for help she will give it.

Same person as the last comment. Just wanted to add that she is NOT easy, that was a mistake! You're expected to read and critique everyone else's work, in addition to writing your own, and this can be very time consuming. Again, take her if you're serious about writing.

I took Ms. Carroll-Hackett in Fall 2007 for 1/2 a semester. In that short time, I learned more about writing than I ever had -- or have since. She is not afraid to hurt your feelings if your writing sucks. She will exorcise every last cliche in every story you write until it's a work of art or you give up. Changed my life as a writer. Take her NOW.

Yes it is true you have to work your butt off for this class but even if you do she will fail you if you are not her teacher. It is amazing to me that teachers like her still manage to stay at a university. Made me feel like my writing was completely useless but would offer no feedback. Freshmen beware!

I've taken two class with this professor and let me just say that she is tough, especially if you're a freshman and not quite on your feet. But if you're willing to put your mind to it, she will work with you. Otherwise, she will fail you. She is brilliant beyond words and her stories relate to class and make it interesting.

Terrible, terrible, terrible teacher. I toughed it out and did not drop her class and it was the worst mistake I could have made. Aren't you supposed to be teaching me and not blabbing about your life?? Wants you to voice your opinion but then constantly disagrees with you! It was HELL!
