I have taken a few courses under Gaffney. While he is no doubt shrewd and intelligent, his advanced age makes it harder for other students to connect. I found his method of enforcing teaching - clicker quizzes, multiple choice exams full of recycled questions from quizzes - to be ineffective, but I do appreciate listening to lectures.

He is so intelligent and sweet! But his old age has caught u with him, at 86 years old he is practically deaf. I got a B's on both tests and a D on the clicker quizzes, still got an A+ in class, sit in the front a couple classes and ask him a question so he knows your name and then you will have a guaranteed A!! ;)

Professor Gaffney has been one of the most insightful person I have ever met. He is full of economic knowledge and is willing to explain a concept to you in great detail if you ask for it. For me, he is one of the greatest teachers I have had and one of the most interesting person I've met too.

The lectures are sometimes dull, but it was an easy & great class (he probably knows people skip a few of the articles haha). You find out a lot about California's resource history from Gaffney. His articles are renowned internationally. If the gov listened to Gaffney, then CA would be in good shape right now! :-)

Ridiculously easy class if you show up to class to take his clicker quizzes. He reuses his quizzes on the midterm and final. I never read and managed to get an A in the class. Great upper division GPA booster.

I know he may not be a great teacher, just know that I have traveled from New York to Riverside many times to meet with Mase. He is an extremely intelligent man, which becomes clear in his writing. For those of you who didn't like his class, I suggest you read some of his essays, and look at their impact on others. He is a lovely man, and very kind

Amazingly easy teacher-great way to bust that upper division econ gpa! Daily clicker quizzes for attendance 1pt for wrong answer, 3pts for correct. Bigger answers are often better. Prof never uses textbook and you can skip ALL assigned readings online. If you're still worried about your grade he'll let you do an extra credit paper.

Great teacher, but bring something to entertain you like a laptop or a cellphone because he can be boring. He's a smart man and very friendly too. This class was an easy A, so easy that I'm taking 146 with him this quarter. Clicker quizzes are awesome! Just choose E and you will Ace the class. I'm serious.

He is rediculously unorganized, almost never lectures, but has "clicker quizes" almost daily. He posts the readings online, but doesn't tell you which readings you need to do for which day. This class is impossible unless you are super geek, or already know the entire history of economic theory, in either case, I'm jealous...

While this man may have alot of knowledge in him, it is clear he has lost touch and age has caught up with him. He is almost senile at times and his lectures end up sounding like a grandpa storytime hour. He is not very vocal at all and has absolutely little or no organization in his classes. Alot of his material are essays that he has written

While he's a friendly fellow, I don't recommend this class if you want to actually learn something. He rants about politics far too much-he's as off the map as Lyndon Larouche. Don't take a micro course from him, he is too stuck on George, and he doesn't seem to think empiricism is important, while claiming objectivity? Hates Rand, Friedman, et a

Professor Gaffney's lectures are not well organized, but do tend to communicate the important information. He is often difficult to understand because he talks too softly.

what a sweet old man. unfortunately his age caught up with him. he was deaf and it seemed like he was lonely. talked too much about nothing, but gave answers to tests beforehand. the midterm had nothing to do with what was studied. just go to class after the midterm to get the answers for the final. he posts those on ilearn. got an A in the class.
