Comment:

Prof Riley is the most caring professor. He really wants you to understand the lectures so he will switch into English frequently to translate and easily goes off topic. The syllabus is definitely a rough outline and not really what is going on. Very disorganized but easy grader.

Comment:

Professor Riley never handed back anything or gave back grades. His lectures were him just going on tangents about his thoughts and sometimes the readings. He couldn't be a nicer guy and really cares about his students. He wants everyone to do well and if you show interest (or at least look like you care), you'll end up with a good grade.

The whole time I had him he didn't give back ANY ASSIGNMENTS. I had absolutely no clue what my grade was until final grades came. We wrote a paper and had an oral final (just what was your fav book). I feel like the class was graded off of if he liked you or not. I wouldn't take him unless you like tangents

Comment:

This guy is the absolute man. Best professor at Colgate. He has had such a tough life and he cares more than anyone about his class. Discussions are awesome and not even based on readings. Take home midterm and we had an oral final. He is the smartest man at Colgate and knows literally everything.

Comment:

Professor Riley really likes teaching and this clearly shows. The subject material and readings can be a bit challenging or boring at times, but lectures are generally more interesting as he connects the texts to the present day. Take notes; you will need them to write essays.

Good amount of reading, but lecture and class discussion is interesting enough. Not much work, but make sure you take good notes because you'll need them to look basck on when he hands out the review for the tests. Usually gets behind syllabus schedule so some work gets eliminated from the low amount to begin with. Very helpful

Comment:

Riley is an excellent professor. I had him for Advanced Grammar for French. I understood everything he said, and if anyone in the class had a question, he explained it well. There weren't many graded projects for the class, but I did well anyway. He's also extremely funny. He made grammar exciting. I'll definitely take another class by him.

Comment:

I took Riley for modernity because of RMP, and was highly disappointed. He was a perma-grader who picked favorites and his subjective grades on the 3 papers/ 2 tests reflected his personal opinion of each student. Each class day was spent listening to Riley ramble about whatever was on his mind. My advice: try to find someone else for modernity.

Riley is the man. I was dreading taking modernity but I can honestly say it is one of my favorite classes that I've taken, and its because of him. Class can be a bit boring because it's mostly lecture but Riley is so smart and can really get you excited about anything. TAKE THIS CLASS. I even considered taking French so I could have him again.

Professor Riley is great. He seems to truly care about his students and did a great job trying to relate to us. He's really funny and laid back. He does a great job explaining what can be difficult reading to help us actually understand the material. Exams and essays are really easy too.

Riley's a good lecturer, though the class itself is a tad boring if you're not enthusiastic about philosophy. Rily's a very nice guy and leads interesting discussions, though I can't say that I was ever really intrigued by the class, but I didn't sleep through it, either. If you like to talk, then take his class--he will make it worth your while.

You'll never feel overwhelmed. You actually get to discuss and understand the books in this one. Professor Riley really understands that students are people- not machines. He also acts like a human- and not a pre-programmed professor. Wonderful

Prof Riley is the most wonderful prof at Colgate and anywhere else as far as I am concerned. There is no comparison. He cares so much about everyone in his class. If you are worried about your french, he will make you feel totally comfortable. He should set the standard for professors because if all profs were like him, the world would be perfect.

Absolutely w/out a doubt the best prof at Colgate and quite possibly, on Earth He's smart, funny, caring, passionate. He's a wonderful human being and an awesome prof. You can't leave Colgate w/out taking him. If u don't take french, start, right away, he is what you are paying 40k a yr for!
