Prof. Lubeck is really intense, but interesting. He has a lot of real world experience and knowledge about how to make a social project have the most impact. He is a really good contact to have, and is the a great networking starter (will introduce you to many people on campus depending on what you are interested in).

His powerpoints are written in his own obscure language, but if you go to class and listen (very, very) carefully, he'll fill in the blanks for you. That being said, most of what you'll learn from the class will probably take place in section/MSI. But in the end, the course is graded on a curve so it doesn't turn out to be all that bad.

Difficult class! he does not know how to engage and present students with information. talks as if he were talking to his peers. worst class of my life! would not take a class with him again!

the pp's are in a language only he knows, the work load is heavy, the grading is tough, the exams are tricky, and you will struggle for a C, but if you keep up on reading and go to lecture he makes complete sense, he is a brilliant man. if you make it through, you will walk away with a fountain of applicable knowledge and be better for it.

Power points were all over the place. He used abbreviations that only he could understand and expected students to understand what they meant. Often repeats information in slides and lecture, and jumps back and forth. Lots of reading and material, and is unclear about it all. Class average was a C. So don't take unless you are a Sociology major.

He's one of the worst professors at UCSC. His lectures have no structure, all he does is read from the powerpoint slides. He's very unclear and unorganized. He doesn't care for his students nor take questions in class. The reading load was a lot(100+pages a week)plus 6-8 300-350 words reading responses. Please avoid taking this class for your major!

Lubeck is extremely unclear in his lectures. He always seems like hes counting the seconds when hes talking to me. Lectures about one thing and assigns another for reading. There is so much content that you can't tell what is going to be on the midterm. If you have to take him, its usually what he says as opposed to the readings on the tests. You n

Prof. is very confusing. His lectures are never based on the reading, they are based on what he knows. He doesn't say where we can locate the information in the book. Makes lectures confusing because he doesn't introduce the topic, rather he jumps back and forth from topic to topic making it hard to understand the material.

Not saying this Professor doesn't know the material but he has absolutely NO structure to his lectures!! He is constantly jumping all over the place and makes it impossible to follow along with! If thats not bad enough, his Power-Points make no sense! He throws in a bunch of arrows that have no significant meaning! DONT TAKE AS A GE CLASS.

Professor Lubeck gets a lot of heat for being condescending and biased, however, although he is very much so, you will learn an incredible amount of material about our world society. He taught me how to think more globally, and if you can think for yourself about the material he teaches you,you will come out a much more knowledgeable person.Take It!

I hated every aspect of this class. Lubeck forgets that he teaches an introductory course. His teaching standpoints were extremely biased and lectures were long and pointless. Class moved extremely fast. He talked at the class and not with it. Assignments were also ridiculously boring and pointless. I wouldn't take this class again if you paid me.

This class is really hard but worth the work. I have learned so much about the real world and how it works. The reading load is a lot (100+ pages a week), but the info is valuable. Dont take this class just for Gen ed credits he teaches it at the level of an upper divsion course. However, I love this class and it was so worth it no matter how hard.

Terrible. Rambles, long pauses, maintains an incredibly biased view while somehow not bringing anything new to the discussions other than the readings (which are long but at least half of them worth it). Grade based on 2 take-home essays and an in-class, plus section attendance and weekly responses to the readings. Would have been a great class....

well-rounded academically. if you wanna LEARN and don't mind reading/writing ALOT, he's the dude, worth it. personally, i didn't get much help when i went to see him during office hrs. unprofessional, told me to "google" it, rushed me out to meet another student...rather than tell me he's busy and reschedule.

Presents a lot of info during lecture, but you learn a lot (if you can, bring a laptop to class). Take home tests make it so you shouldn't be too stressed if you missed something. Assigns what I found to be an unreasonable amount of reading. I found the papers engaging, anything you don't know off hand can be learned from his readings or on the net

Very intimidating, but he is rumored to be helpful when you talk to him directly. The topics he covered were too extensive and broad; the class spent a mere two weeks on the main topic of the course.Totally turned me on the subject for a good decade.

Lubeck has an interesting perspective and great insight but apparently failed to realize that he was teaching an introduction course. Lectures are long and drawn out, and need to be synthesized because much of the material is not reflective of midterms and tests. Challenging course that could be more rewarding if material was presented differently.

A few Words: Power Point sucks. He is not a good professor in big classes, but he is really cool one on one. A few problems: He calls China a Market-Leninist state. There is no such thing, China is state capitalism, there is no way around it. Other than that, he really wasnt bad. What sucks is learning such a topic with a large number of students

This guy knows his****. Give him a chance before judging him as a bully, because he cares about his students enough to put a lot of time into preparing lectures, as well as answering questions one on one. If you actually take the class seriously, the papers won't be a problem - there's nothing that he just "doesn't explain," I'm sorry to say.
