I really enjoyed Prof. Shively. He was very nice and understanding. He clearly loves what he does and he does it well. POL 1054 is a great class! He was well organized and had great stories. Tip: Read everything and pay attention, take good notes, and the tests will be easy.

Professor Shively was an engaging, well-educated, and organized teacher, and I very much enjoyed his lectures. Although 1054 covers a large amount of subject material, the only difficulty in grading was a result of the TA being particular about terms. His teaching was extremely well put-together, his stories are interesting, and he is helpful.

I had W.P. for an Honors section of this class, and I loved it! His exams are tricky since he gives you a really broad study guide, but the exam is really narrow. He is really helpful if you have questions though, and his lectures are interesting. He is also kind of hilarious, and has had a fascinating life, which he told us a lot about.

Shively is really into what he teaches, fumbles a lot over his words like someone says. Take good notes, however. They'll save you for the study sheets. His grading scheme is a bit off though - 50% for the final, 30% for the midterm, 20% for the final paper. Make sure you do all of these well, or your grade will suffer. Easy class, though.

Professor Shively is excellent at lectures. He pours his extensive knowledge onto students without being haughty. He is very articulate and his mannerisms are endearing. Every time he is asked a question, he is never stumped. Well, so far in the class anyway. And he is accommodating of student concerns.

A understanding and insightful professor, Mr. Shively made the freshman seminar on puzzles more interesting than I expected and taught basic statistics skills I still use in current courses. He is highly recommended and enjoyable to have as a teacher!

Comment:
Shively definitely knows the subject matter well. However, I think that this particular class on models is better suited as a graduate course. We went through a number of rather complicated concepts very quickly using an outdated textbook (1975). So the tests were relatively hard. The prof. also relied heavily on math, felt almost like economics.

Shively is a great guy. His freshman seminar on puzzles was a little pointless but it really wasn't too demanding. Shively sometimes fumbles over his words or confuses himself but he's really understanding and I have a lot of respect for him. I don't really recommend the class, but I do recommend the prof.

He's a really nice guy. He gave a ton of examples in class (more than enough), and while lectures were pretty boring, they are very useful for tests, which have a pretty easy essay section and a kind of hit-or-miss definition section. Pretty good for an introductory class.

He is a generally nice person. Essay test is easy. ID test is a different story. 90 terms and he chooses 7 or 8 randomly. Tough to study for that one. The paper is a joke in my opinion. He bases a lot on your writing quality as opposed to the actual information. I understand the point, but I can take English if I wanted that kind of help. Good guy.

a really nice guy, and very helpful and understanding when it comes to tests. his lectures are different and hard to get used to at first, but after awhile they are interesting and make more sense. Tests are kind of difficult, but he hands out review sheets before the exam with all the IDs and Essay possibilities on them, and it reflects the test

shively is a great teacher and really knows his stuff. His tests (IDs) can be extremely long. It's work, but you learn from it, which i guess is what you are paying for. Very accommodating with test dates, papers are usually due by 12am that day, extremely flexible. Great Prof.
