Comment:
He's good at explaining the information that's being presented along with demonstrating some of it. Only downside is that he reads a powerpoint all class basically with some videos, along with the essays(4 of them) that are pretty long and tedious for someone taking this just to fulfill an elective credit. Not a horrible class though.

This class is horrible. The topics are uninteresting and he just lectures for the entire class period. If you are taking a music class for core, DO NOT take this one. It's easy, but not worth the boredom I endured for an entire semester. I was tempted to skip everyday because it actually pained me to learn about Beethoven for the 100th time.

Comment:
This class is fine, and Dr. Spittal is a nice guy. The lectures are insanely boring and he goes way too fast to even attempt taking notes. He gives you the tests and all of the answers before you take it, so study those and you're golden. The listening and chapter quizzes in the textbook are a pain and completely useless, but a good grade boost.

Dr. Spittal is a very good professor. Although many people believe that he expects you to know things already, if you do the work, then it will come easy to anyone. He is very helpful and is willing to meet one-on-one with you to make sure that you understand exactly what he is trying to get across. Great professor with great credentials!

Comment:
Dr. Spittal was not an especially good professor. He is condescending and is bad at teaching the material because he assumes you already know it. The class also moved extremely slowly, unless you have to take it I would say to avoid Dr. Spittal.

Great professor and conductor! He treats our band like a college band should be treated, but having us take responsibility for our parts. Sometimes when he is in a bad mood, he expects us to read his mind, but not knowing your part puts him in a bad mood, so its easily avoidable.

I had Spittal for Music in the Humanities, and it was not my favorite class. If you take notes during powerpoint and study for the midterm and final, you should do well. He also gives listening quizzes, which are really easy if you study, I just found the subject matter boring.

I was in his Music in the Humanities class. As long as you take notes in class or review the PowerPoint presentations before the midterm and the final, you will do well in the class. The tests/quizzes are relatively easy. He does not take attendance.

He's really nice but the class can be a little boring at times because its about music in medieval times. But its a really easy A, just take notes during class and you will get 100% on the quizes. we spent most of the class time listening to music and watching operas so its really easy

I really like him! I have never seen him have a "bad" day, in fact he's been nothing but nice to me! We had class in the attic of the music mansion and after I sprained my knee and needed crutches he moved the class to the music annex. So thoughtful. Hes very passionate about music and is a genius. Listening to music in class is my favorite

Easy class. You dont need to be into music to do well. Everything you need to know is in powerpoints that get put online so notes are optional. Book is helpful 4 review and listening guides but not necessary. Quizzes are straightforward and you dont even have to study too hard if you pay attention in class. That being said, dont miss 2 many classes

As a director he is undeniably good. He just isn't really that nice and he expects you to sort of read his mind when he conducts. On his nice days, he's awesome, but there were definitely times where I felt personally offended by him in class.

Covers lots of material, tests are pretty comprehensive but graded with a curve. Spittal is pretty brilliant musically but you can tell he isn't too into teaching music to people who aren't musicians.

Knows the material very well...but I can't say the same for how well he knows how to teach it. Can be a jerk if you're not on his good side (or even if you are, depending on the day). If you pay attention and care about the subject, you'll be fine.

Doesn't care enough to get to know you, means doesn't care if you show up. more concerned with his own composing than teaching the class. fairly easy material and open notes. what more could you ask for?

If you're not a music major, not worth your time. Some of the Jazz history is interesting, and all the tests are open notes, but the questions are really really specific and I think he just makes random crap up. You have to go to lots of boring concerts.
