If you're serious about learning how to write and edit professionally, take this class; Willie forces you to look critically at your work and sharpen your writing. He teaches you to catch fatal mistakes you had never considered in your essays, emails, notes, etc. You also learn how to write legal memos and briefs, giving you a huge advantage in 1L.

Prof. Schatz Legal Writing course is a challenge worth facing. Students will not do well on the first few assignments, but those struggles will lead to better writing practices. I entered a lazy writer, but left much more refined. Schatz's harsh grading forces students to chose words wisely and become keen editors. He instills worthy habits!

I’m shocked at the level of disregard for student concerns and Schatz's exorbitantly brutal grading methods. I nearly dropped this course awhile ago, and it appears that I should have done so. If you take Schatz you will learn something about legal writing, but your scores will probably not reflect your effort or quality of work on any level.

I thought Willie was very helpful when it came to law school preparation. He still has very high expectations, and just achieving a B is very difficult. He can come across as condescending, but you cannot simply bs your way to a good grade in this class

This guy is absolutely horrible. The class is structured relatively well but he is AWFUL! He plays favorites A LOT, and it shows. I actually had to drop his class because of the level of disrespect I was treated with, although I did absolutely nothing to deserve that treatment. I participated, showed up, etc. AWFUL.

Willie is a challenging professor and will not let bad writing slide. You will be a better writer after this class. He is disorganized but expects his students to challenge him if they think he should be doing something differently. If you can get past his eccentricities and having your writing honestly evaluated you should have a good experience

Very little margin for error on his assignments. He is always looking for negative aspects of your writing. He also does a poor job of informing us when assignments are due. Very disorganized

Willie is the best! His class is not easy, but it can teach you a lot. He gives you all his personal contact info so you can get in touch with him at home in an emergency. If you work hard and participate in his class, he will be extremely helpful and forgiving.

Straight up, this teacher is a liberal hippie. He made us read the NY Times before some classes. He grades very, very hard. Participation is a must. Voice is kind of annoying. I do not recommend. Ignored my emails, nothing ticks me off more than that.

While sometimes unclear, he has high standards which in turn make you want to do better and even your very best. He is sharp and knows what he is talking about though sometimes he is easy to underestimate -- very cool, highly recommended
