Comment:
Professor Brett-Smith is extremely nice and knowledgeable. However, if you like a class with structure, this is not for you. Only two assignments all semester, and it is hard to keep up with lectures because they're scattered. My favorite part of class was hearing about her personal experiences in Africa. Very interesting, I just like structure.

Professor Brett-Smith is undoubtedly one of the best professors at Rutgers and certainly my favorite. You learn something new and exciting every day. Her lectures consist of open discussions that really help you learn. She very much wants to see you succeed. She's always available for help and sincerely cares about her students. Absolutely great.

Signed up for Pre-Col, Oceanic and African art. She focuses too much on african CULTURE and not so much anything else. No class work, confusing exams and lectures, uninteresting way to present info. and very unorganized. Nice lady, terrible class.

SHE IS SO MAGICAL AND KNOWLEDGEABLE. Loves talking to people. Hilarious in her own way. Her back is broken and she's older now but she still travels!!

She is very concerned with using "proper English" and will actually tell you that you don't speak it correctly. I suggest you ask her to edit your paper before you hand it in so you know what she means by "proper english". She was unclear about the attendance policy or what she wanted to grade. Ask her!

I took Arts of W. Africa with Professor Brett-Smith this past semester. It took me a while to get used to her lecturing style, but I quickly found that she was helpful, esp when it came time for papers...I was always stopping by for office hours. She appreciates questions/interest in the subject she knows quite well! Really enjoyed her class!

She really knows what she is talking about and is very helpful if you show up to class, ask questions, and just make the effort. The class is hard and you really need to know what you are talking about on exams. Just because it is an intro class do not let that fool you. The concepts are very Non-Western and difficult to grasp.

Had very strong interest in the subject matter going into this class: Afr., Oceanic, and Precolumbian Art. I thought it was going to be about ART, but it was mainly about the CULTURE in which the art was from and not the actual art itself. Think before you take this course. She is also very unorganized like others have mentioned. Real funny though.

shes nice enough and the content is pretty interesting.. but disorganized and pretty difficult grader. informs class the date of part 1 of 2 final exam A WEEK BEFORE THE FINAL. granted, ive never taken an art history class but this class is too much work for a 200 level and it killed my gpa

She can be monotone and sound boring, but she has a lot of interesting stuff to say. Doesn't care about dates really. Go to class, take good notes. Straight forward tests, but she will curve the other way if everyone does well (ie. needed a 92 for an A on the midterm).

Very knowledgable about Non-Western art and very intelligent, but a bit disorganized. Take lots of notes and go to class, 2 exams and a map quiz. Exam formats are very different than most art history classes, because she cares about concepts, not dates.

The material is not difficult to understand but because her speciality is African Art she can only say so much. However, she is easy to follow and allows for questions, making the class more of a seminar of sorts. Highly recommended.
