He seems super intense at first, but that's just to scare people off. By the third week, he's super laid back and easy. He's super passionate about participation, so raise your hand for everything. His grading system is weird, but everyone gets an A in the end (I think)

The people saying that Professor Fields is the best prof ever are one of the lucky 5 students he chooses arbitrarily (or because they went to a Jesuit high school) to be his favorites. He is a great lecturer and very witty, but is the most Catholic-conservative Jesuit teacher I've had yet at Georgetown. Come to every class on time and take notes.

Father Fields is by far the best professor in Theology department (and possibly at Georgetown). His lectures are riveting, frequently injected with humor and wit. Come to class having done the readings and you will be adequately prepared. Do not graduate without taking a course with Fr. Stephen Fields!

Father Fields is an incredibly well educated man who loves the sound of his own voice. His Problem of God class is super easy as long as you have no qualms about answering questions aloud in class. Your grade will be entirely based on and handful of quizzes in which he evaluates your oral answer to one question given in the spur of the moment.

Father Fields is hilarious and an eloquent lecturer. Classes are fun but he goes off tangent easily. Philosophy-based content but no written exams - only 3 oral exams (easy A's every time). Great option for Problem of God class, definitely recommend. Get ready to laugh with Father Fields and debate about the existence of the soul.

He's an essential part of the Georgetown experience. Legendary professor (think Robin Williams in Dead Poets Society). Don't be intimidated by his socratic method.

Father is a very unorthodox professor! His lectures are off the cuff, demands articulate debates, and is very unbiased about students' beliefs. All exams are oral (3 per semester) and are based on questions directly asked from the study guide provided. I would recommend staying after class to ask questions and engage in more discussions with him!

Father Fields' class was of high value and a great choice to take The Problem of God with. There are not many grades (majority of which are oral exams) The class is graded heavily on participation (Father Field's is a fan of cold calling.) This class was unlike any other I have taken before, Fields pushes his students to engage with the material.

Fr. Fields does well to present Catholic theology in the most logical way possible. His assignments are pretty straightforward, and he is kind when it comes to grading. However, there are certain things that get under his skin. e.g. if you don't show up to class on time, he may throw a tantrum. He takes his class seriously--participate when able.

Father Fields is one of my favorite professors at Georgetown. I am not Catholic and did not agree with most of what he said but I learned a lot. He is hilarious, and goes up and down the aisles of the class talking to students. Office hours are very helpful. If you are engaged you will get a good grade. Little to no reading, only 2 papers.

Jesuit education embodied, achieves "eloquencia perfecta" every class. never intimidating, paces through class working together with studies to unlock the logic behind faith, truth, and more. always available outside of class. THE MAN. best teacher i've had thus far, go everyday or you're cheating yourself

Fr. Fields is awesome! I only wish that I started speaking up more earlier on in the semester, and maybe my A- would have been an A. The material is interesting, he is an amazing lecturer, and he truly gets to know every student, even the quiet kids! Not a heavy workload, easily the best option for Problem of God class. Take him!

POG is all about who your professor is and Fr. Fields is the one you want. He frames this class in such a way that it avoids religious bias or getting to caught up in doctrines. It really focuses on the rationality of faith, God, and morality, while also examining the problems. Easily the best professor I've had here. Outstanding

Fr. Fields is the most amazing Professor I have ever had. His insights and the course content were consistently mind-blowing, every single class. He gives very little outside work, but this is not a boring course; he expects you to really think and participate in class. This class made my semester. I cannot stress this enough. Take it!

A Georgetown Legend. Do not leave this school without taking a class taught by this great man. I could listen to him lecture about Organic Chemistry and probably get an A because of the way he commands language and cultivates thought. He's more than a professor, he embodies what a "jesuit education" is all about.

20th and 21st Century was my third theology class with Fields, and it was easily the best class I've taken at Georgetown. If you haven't taken Fields, you haven't done Georgetown right.

Quizzes not too hard as long as you pay attention in class. Very knowledgeable professor who cares about his students. However his use of the socratic method made class seem unstructured and long-winded. Also didn't get to 3 of the books he assigned, so might want to hold off buying the books until he starts assigning readings from them.

Took this class because I loved Fields' Problem of God class. Easiest and most awesome teacher you could have. He cares more about the discussion and your development than grading. Four one pagers, oral midterm and final, and participation. Definitely deserving of the Dorothy Brown Award this year (Georgetown's best professor).
