His class is pretty easy and he gives really good feedback on essays. You can pass by without reading anything and SparkNoting it for essays. He cares about his students and was a sweet teacher who often brought snacks. He goes through the readings thoroughly for any student who needs help.

I took Honnef for German Lit, and I just wish I'd taken some of his classes before. He did require more writing assignments than most other classes in the German dept, but he gave plenty of feedback, and he did what he could to help students who had trouble writing in German or understanding the course material. Very approachable, and a funny guy.

I took intro to German Literature (conducted in German) with Theo and he was great. Do the reading, come to class, and be an active participant and you will do well. Grade is made up of attendance, 2 five page papers, and regular 1 page responses. A fun class overall with great reading selection!

VERY smart man. He's a super unbiased essay grader, and comes to class prepared. He has a slight german accent, but I guarantee you his English is better than yours. I completely trust his feedback on my papers. I had to work a lot for the class, but he recognizes your effort, and will definitely give you the A if you work for it. Super reasonable

Honnef is a nice guy. I liked the way the class was taught, I felt like I gained so much more fluency and ability to write in this class than in any other German class, or what I could have got in German 6. The best way to learn a language is to immerse. And when the whole class is in German, watch German news, and talk, you make a lot of progress.

During 2005 and 2006 I took all Theo's upper division German literature classes at UCSC, and must say he was by far my favorite professor during my undergrad work. Glad to hear he is still teaching and opening up the complex but awesome world that is German literature. He is the type of professor that expects a lot from his students,but thats great

Very German prof. Helpful in bringing up good topics to write about; I would advise in taking notes throughout the discussions. Overall I am glad I had Theo as a prof because he really isn't bad; he's very approachable. His class is not the easiest but definitely doable. Def unbiased in grading papers but many topics/readings were very one sided.

My first college class and its still one of my favorites. Theo created an atmosphere for very interesting debates on Justice and Morality. The reading material was also very interesting (I really liked the Lawrence Weschler book). Theo is also has a great sense of humor and is a very approachable teacher. I'd highly recommend taking his class.

THIS CLASS WAS SO MUCH FUN!!! THE DISCUSSIONS WERE ENGAGING AND THOUGHTFUL. HE IS VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE AND PERSONABLE. THE BOOKS WE READ WERE REALLY GOOD AND THOUGHT PROVOKING. ONE OF MY FAVORITE TEACHERS!!!

This professor tries to push his ideology into you, if there is something he doesnt agree with you on, your voice will not be heard in class, he will try to drown out you voice and he will let the people who suck up to speak, even if they dont know what they are talking about . I would not reccomend this professor if you are not of the extreme left

Glad to see he's still teaching and still cool. I had him as an instructor years ago at Univ of Maryland in Augsburg, Germany and thought he was great. Learned a lot and it helped me a great deal - I spent another eight years living/working in Nuernberg, Germany with pretty much nothing but German friends, neighbors, running groups.

He does expect a lot, but he is such a respectable prof. you learn a lot from discussing the texts, and he is very clear about what he expects. He is willing to help and is a very reasonable person. He won't assign more then he thinks you can handel, which may be a little more then we think we can. He always has all books in English on reserve.
