I took Wayne Schneider's class on American Musical Theater back in 1988. I believe it to be the most impactful, relevant, and important class I took at Colby College.

Comment:

One thing you can say about Wayne is he won't say something he doesn't know. Don't get me wrong, he knows a lot about music history, but if some obscure topic comes up (on which he will, of course, not test you), he will admit if he is not well versed and likely suggest a place you can read more about it.

I really like taking History I & II with Wayne. But his lectures are super dry, occasionally peppered with jokes and interesting facts about different composers. He's not always very clear about exactly what's on the listening exams, but you do pick up on it eventually. I would not take this class unless it's A) required or B) your favorite subject

Incredible, passionate, knowledgeable, sweet professor. His lectures are beautifully enthralling & eloquent. He explains complicated ideas by playing them on the piano! His listening exams are not easy, but you'll be fine if you listen to the stuff & become familiar with it early on. Schneider's a genius; he inspired me to major in music. Love him!

Fun professor and a fun class. A real breeze if you've taken any music class before, like in high school. A good class to get your fine arts credit out of the way. A chill, funny professor who knows what he's talking about.

very passionate about his subject, very animated and well humored. he has a lot of outside knowledge and interesting information though most of the required material comes from studying. even if you have no interest in the field, he makes it enjoyable

this class is actually pretty hard b/c of exams. go to class even though he doesnt take attendance; he goes through his really rough outlines of the material and helps you understand. textbook is pretty useless but good to have around for clarification and don't need CD - he gives mp3s online for listening. sweetest man ever and fair grader

Great teacher and great class. It's interesting but really hard. It's a class that you need to put time in, but worth it. He's one of the best teachers I've had. Absolutely worth it!

Probably my favorite professor at UVM of all time. Really a sweetheart, funny, obviously passionate about the subject. Exams have two parts, written and listening - as long as you listen to the music and pay attention in lectures you'll be fine, but reading the text helps a lot. I would encourage anyone to take his class!

Tests and grading is relentless, material is fairly tough, but you can make it impossible by skipping a lot. However, Schneider is quite possibly the coolest person above 50. He wins. His "moves" while listening to jams is priceless.

I am a business student who took this class to fulfill a requirement. I chose this class specifically because it was an introductory class tha seemed interesting and esy. owever, I was horribly mistaken. It is boring and is more difficult than accounting, statistics, and american literature combined! The professor is a great, but expects too much!

Really cool guy! Even though the material the material of his lectures could get very boring,the way he conducted his classrooms made it interesting. Entire class would just laugh with him sometimes. Learned a lot. Would take off his shoes and dance and constantly play his piano!

Schneider is a hilarious guy. He is quirky and weird, and that's what makes his class so great. He is so passionate about music, and loves to teach. I found his exams to be extremely hard, but attending class and listening to the music frequently will help.
