Comment:

I would never take this class again by him. He never responds to emails and he goes against his word. Not a trustworthy guy because of this. His class is only based off of quizzes from practice problems from book and exams. No homework, no extra credit. He is hard to understand and his handwriting is really really sloppy.

Comment:

Dr. Shen is a brilliant mathematician and the expert on his area of study. That said, he expects you to automatically know the material and if you ask him for help with a subject a few sections back from what he thought most recently, you may as well look for a different source of help. He in fact all but told me to give up on my dreams.

Comment:

Shen is, by far, the worst professor I've ever had. He has a thick accent and on top of this he stands at the front of the class and mumbles for an hour an a half. His notes are challenging to read so even if he remembers to upload them they're useless. I have had to teach myself this whole course. Shen's teaching is appalling. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!

Day 1 - I couldn't understand what he was saying 3 weeks later - I can understand what he's saying He has a strong accent and you need to get used to his voice. As soon as class starts, he goes straight into examples. You have to self study all the material. Quizzes straight from HW. Tests from HW & Review. You won't be able to understand him. GL

Comment:

I had a very hard time understanding professors with heavy accents so I struggled to understand him. If you have no trouble with accents then he's probably your best bet. Quizes come from homework and hosts lectures on zoom and uploads his lecture notes. Handwriting is pretty hard to read, but with a course as hard as Calc 2, count your blessings

I found it hard to understand from him as he would just come to class and start doing questions without properly explaining the topic. One good thing was that every quiz was from hw.

Obsessed with cheating (literally talked about it on a dozen or so occasions), but is generally a great lecturer. He moves a little fast, but this is a tough course. If you do well on the final, you will do well in the class.

Good lectures, knows what he's talking about. May seem difficult to understand at first but posts his notes online. Easy quizzes, right out of the homework. Prepares you for the final well and he even writes them. Even hosts his lectures on Zoom so you can attend online. One of the best calculus professors.

Comment:

Lectures are to the point, mostly practice problems/ examples given. Option to attend lectures online is a plus. He expects you to put forth the effort to pass, that being said, if he knows you are trying and have put in the effort he will be lenient on grading. No Homework given for grades, everything quiz and test based. Do practice problems!

Quiz problems are straight from the homework, so if you show up and do the homework, you will pass his class. He is a great professor and he teaches you what you need to know. He posts his notes online after every class. He writes the finals for 165 and 166, so his review classes and practice tests are basically the same as the final problems.

Comment:

Clearly very knowledgeable, but not always easy to understand. He rarely looked around for questions, and his accent and hand writing were difficult at times. However, I had no problems in the class beyond difficult homework that comes with Calc II, and he taught the class well. Fair tests, fair quizzes, overall just fine.

If you don't do the homework and practice you won't pass. You could get by not going to class and studying the book but there are pop quizzes to look out for. (even though he usually says when) In class, he goes through lots of example in the book. and gives review guides for each exam. The guides are a lot similar to the actual test.

Very knowledgeable, but a horrible teacher. It was the first class ever where I was struggling not to fall asleep during the lectures. most of the students stopped coming by the middle of semester. Tests were much harder than the rest of the assignments. And he left the whole class unprepared for the tests. So, the average was quite low.

He's not the best teacher in the world, but he is very predictable. All the quizzes are from the homework. He also gives sample tests. If you do all the homework and read the book, you will be in good shape. He doesn't try to trick you.

Lectures were dry, but he worked out so many examples that showed up on quizzes and exams. Let us skip the final if we were happy with our class grade after exam 2. He made calc 2 as easy as possible.

Comment:

This class is an easy A if you put in the effort. One of the few teachers to give reviews for tests, and the reviews are JUST like the test. (Same problems, diff numbers) His weekly quiz questions come from the homework, another easy A. Do the assignments he gives you and you'll pass with flying colors. Not EASY, but one of the easiest teachers.
