Dr Walton is a great teacher with a lot of field experience. He has a wry sense of humor and knows if a student is serious about their education or just wasting his time. He has a lot to offer and is generous with students who show initiative. If you want a solid introduction to geology and have respect for your elders, Dr. Walton is you man.

Comment:
Dr. Walton is condescending and is more intimidating during lecture than helpful. My first exam was explained as 4-5 SHORT answer and 20 multiple choice questions. 70% of the exam was 4 ESSAY questions (whole page answers). My second midterm is the day before stop day and covers chapters 7-18 and no specifics are given. NO LECTURE SLIDES ARE GIVEN!

Great teacher go to his office hours and talk to him he wont let you fail. He is an old guy talk to him like you would a grandpa, but he is very quick for his age. Read the book and look at slides. Watch youtube videos for extra help.

Attended class 1/4 of the time, missed the first exam, half of the homeworks, nearly all the clicker questions for extra credit (you can get 10%!). All I did was read the chapter summaries and look over his practice exams. If you go on the days to turn in homework and attend tests you cannot fail. 85% is an A and he curves every test separately too

Dr. Walton is a really nice older guy, his tests ae extremely hard, and require a lot of time to prepare for. Otherwise the class is pretty easy, and I do not recommend getting the book, it is a big waste of money because we never used it except when he would say look at the book for a different POV on a certain topic.

I'm a Genetics major but have a strong interest in other sciences, especially dinosaurs and paleontology. I spoke with an advisor who recommended I try Geol 101 to see if I wanted to switch majors, and I am so glad I did! I loved this class! You need to go and pay attention. I never opened the book, but I got high A's on all of his tests. have fun!

This class was super hard!!! I studied really hard except for 1 test and I never got over a 70... with the curve. His notes are pretty much pointless. But I would look over the old tests before the test since about 10 questions come from old ones. But seriousl, take this class for pass or fail... or just don't take it at all.

I am a geology major. While his class contains lots of extra credit opportunities, it is designed to challenge geology majors. The notes he gives you are completely incomprehensible and he does not test from the book, making it difficult to make good grades on tests. HW is insanely hard. I will continue with geology but am glad his class is over!

His intro class is aimed at Geology majors - DO NOT take it if you are just looking for your 1 natural science credit! I am very pleased he is making me (a geo major) think hard, it will help in the long run. Non-science people should simply take another class in my opinion.

go to class, clicker points help out in the long run! thought this was a very hard intro course and I'm majoring in geology! take the 103 lab, explains the information better than the lectures! and if you don't go to class he posts his notes online that you can get.

Professor Walton is a terrible teacher. Very stuck up, he wont answer questions after lectures. The test are ridiculously hard for an intro class even though they are heavily curved. He often brags about how many students fail his class. Worst decision ever taking his class and I am severely regretting it !

his 101 is the worst class I have ever taken! He proudly stated on the first day that his class average is a 60 percent. His tests were ridiculously hard with questions worded so difficultly that no amount of studying or classroom attendence could help. You had to already be a geologist to understand him.

GO TO CLASS. That is the key to getting a good grade in this course, as extra credit is offered every day and adds up at the end of the semester. Tests are hard but are graded on a substantial curve, plus he gives you a free 5% on the final grade. Yes, he sucks as a teacher, but deal with it. I ended up with an A and learned pretty much nothing.

I took Geology 101 as a science elective and LOVED it. I missed ONE class, and only because I was sick. I WANTED to go to this class. He keeps it fun and the info is all there. The book is useless, unless you don't understand something. He'll try to help you understand it, though. I got an A without taking the final.(he drops the lowest test grade)

I took his intro to geology. Be careful, as I know for a fact the TA's report on here. Class is graded with a curve, but by no means is easy. Look for another professor for an INTRODUCTORY course. Walton is the head of the department, and does not teach very well.

He gives grad-level challenging tests, but grades them with an 8-10% curve and drops your lowest test out of the four he gives. Homework is graded leniently and if you go to discussion sections (optional) they pretty much give you all the answers. Plus, in class quizzes can get you up to 10% extra credit so GO TO CLASS!

I pulled off an A because attendance is 10% e-c & the curve on the tests is usually around 10%. He thinks that everyone is a Geology major and has prior knowledge coming in to this intro class. The tests are ridiculous even though they are multiple choice. Answers include "more than one of the above" and "I don't know someone should research that"
