Comment:

Dr. McGuire is an interesting guy. He is obviously very knowledgeable, but that is what makes his courses hard. It seemed like he was more interested in showing off his abilities than teaching. He will give overly-complicated examples just for the sake of doing so. Be prepared to do a lot of self-teaching and to find outside resources.

Comment:

The subject matter in itself is not at all easy to digest, and Dr. McGuire does not make it any easier by breezing through and expecting you to figure out the rest. Expect to be on your own a lot. The one good thing is that he can be quite generous with bonus points. Be prepared to pull some of your own hair out.

Comment:

Teaches off of Powerpoint, word by word. Provides some examples but not alot, Labs were tough, most of the time you will be better off teaching yourself. He does have a cheatsheet that you can use on the test. Don't expect a quick reply if you've sent him an email or left him a voicemail.

His reviews do absolutely nothing. His PowerPoints were from 2009. Tries to lighten the mood with occasional corny jokes. Says "OK" every 15 seconds. Was absolutely no help out of class. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!!!!

Do not take him. He does not help students at all. Very hard to meet outside the class. Very hard labs & no hints on the homework or labs. I did not learn anything in his class. Does not post grades, did not knew where I stood till the end of the semester. Halfway in the semester, posted all the homeworks and course documents , very hard to follow

Comment:

McGuire is one of the nicest professors I've had. He tells a lot of corny jokes which lightens up the class. His lectures can be hard to follow at times, but make sure you copy down whatever he writes on the board and do the reviews. The lab assignments were difficult for me but I still did well in the class.

Summer: Prof. McGuire is a good teacher, however his class and the way he teaches is not comprehensible. If you are very interested in copious amount of information in one class period, then this class is for you. If you like to comprehend the information you are given, steadily, then I do not recommend this class.

I don't recommend taking this class in the summer like I did. Some days I was in class for 4 hours catching up. He has dry jokes but he tries to be funny. His personality is pretty cool. But the material is super hard to understand. He didn't take attendance but I recommend going to class if you want to pass. Gave extra credit to help students.

He's an ok teacher. He teaches mainly off power point, so it's hard to learn. It was hard go get a hold of him outside the classroom. He told us that if we had any questions, to ask the tutors. Tests were easy as long as you looked over all the power points. Gave a review but rarely prepared you for the test.

Terrible teacher. He expects us to learn a programing language almost exclusively through PowerPoint lectures. He never let me apply anything he was teaching, thus I never learned anything from this class. Almost no homework, no optional practice, no text book, no projects, nothing. Near useless teacher. Your better off teaching yourself.

I took his class because I needed it for my major but when I got in there he expected us to know stuff that we didn't learn in 146. When i emailed him he wouldn't respond and when i would ask the T.A. he wouldn't help either like he was better than the class. He tried to be funny but all he did was tell corny jokes. i wanted to sleep through class

Summer '06 Dr. McGuire taught a gaming course that was a lot of fun. It was obviously still experimental (1st time taught) so it wasn't extremely well organized, but the subject matter made the course interesting and fun to participate in. If this class is offered again, TAKE IT.

Last semester (fall 05) took him for 272 (assembly). He did a terrible job, this semester I was forced to take him again (being the only teacher that teaches 272 & 333) and he is doing a lot better at it. He had some serious family issues last semester, I felt really bad for the guy, but cancel the class, dont teach it when you are having issues.+-

Okay, he's a really nice dude and he admitted at te end of the year that he didn't teach the class very well. His humor is dry, but bear with him. I see other people find him helpful, and I'm sure he was. I just had a bad experience with this class. I did get a B, so I was glad about that considering I couldn't understand the material at all.

Great professor. Explains things clearly. If you do the practice work, you'll do well on the tests. I learned the material, and my friends in other sections didn't. Will take him for as many courses as I can. Very funny -- tells lots of jokes that actually apply to the subject.
