Great guy but not a good teacher overall. the lectures are painful and the goal of the lecture is often very unclear. Very nice and clearly knowledgeable but lacks in the ability to engage students and make himself clear.

His lectures could be slightly painful because it was often hard to figure out how what he was saying related to the outlines. Just get all the terms from the outlines and look them up on Wikipedia--this is how I passed the class! He is very friendly and nice though!

If you like history you'll LOVE Field. Very knowledgeable and has many very hilarious quirks. I loved his class. Can sidetrack off outlines but it is usually interesting. Test's are fair, and reading is interesting, and mandatory for a good grade. I will take more classes with him!

I have to force myself to want to attend class and even then I can't pay attention because lecture is so dry. He is HIGHLY knowledgeable on his topic but doesn't know how to present it. Doesn't use powerpoint. Doesn't lecture on popular figures.

Obviously knowledgeable professor, but class is extremely dry and boring. If you do the readings, take notes from his lectures, and write a few good papers, then you'll be fine.

Older guy, witty and droll. Serious, but very kind. Ridiculously detailed knowledge. Lectures are interesting and fairly focused. Main points are repeated - great for note-taking. Speech pattern is slightly odd and rambly, but not too hard to follow. Success in the class is based mostly on reading all books and writing a couple of good papers.

But, he's really nice and seems to genuinely care about how you do. Definitely visit his office hours! It pays off.

He is a really great professor! He knows soo much information about the particular subject. He is also really helpful. Go to his office hours. I went and he's written 2 rec. letters for me already. Also he really cares about how you do! He's funny and so nice!

Professor Field is an extremely intelligent, interesting, and humorous professor! I very much enjoyed his class, and I think that others interested in the Renaissance and Greek/Roman Antiquity will truly profit from his teachings!
