Comment:
Bruce is a nice guy, and a fun teacher. The group problem sets can save your grade if you have good people who can work together and take time to get them right (I did). Your grade needs saving because his tests are awful. Horribly difficult, average for first was a 55... sure he curves them but they're still rough. Go to office hours.

he's def knowledgeable and passionate about the class/ the material. however tests are ridiculously hard, group papers are a joke, esp when he grades real hard. classes put u to sleep - better off not going. willing to talk out of class but not of much help anyway.

Prof. Reynolds is very smart and extremely interested in the material. That being said, his tests and essays were not easy. The essays were written in groups, so you kind of had to get lucky. The heavy amount of reading was all mandatory, as well as class attendance. However, there is a curve, so this class is manageable.

Try to keep up with readings as the professor will test you specifically on the material covered in the readings. 355 is rather different from other econ. courses in that it is inclined more towards the historical perspective. Class lectures were not very helpful unless you have done the readings for the assigned days. Work hard.

this class is not an easy A. it's not even an easy B. that said, work hard and you'll be fine. besides, reynolds works his a-- off preparing for the lectures, so it seems fair that we should have to put something into it ourselves.

Comment:
Disappointing class. I wanted to learn about the economy of China, and I came out knowing only one or two more things about China than what I already knew. Reynolds is a bad lecturer, and his classes are boring. I studied almost none for the final, and did two grades better than the first test.

Be prepared to do a lot of reading for this class, not your typical econ class. Group essays can be stressful, if you get assigned a bad group it's probably going to suck..a lot of ppl end up writing their group essays by themselves (there are 5 300-word essays). If you do the reading the test is fair. Reynolds is enigmatic, I can't figure him out.

While overall, this course is exceptional in the topic it covers, the study group essays are ridiculous. If you get stuck with a bad group, those essays will drag your grade down. It seems Reynolds' opinion weighs too heavily against your arguments. In the end, my test scores were all above average, but the essays crushed my term grade. Good luck.

Wow this man loves email. Emails, emails, emails. Also has a rather annoying "Discussion" session at the end of every lecture - overall, a good lecturer, helpful and entertaining.

Very Hilarious. He truly cares about his subject and his students. His tests are hard... you have to read and you have to go to classes. However, he does curve them to an 80-85ish. Group essay sucked a lot. But you'll learn if you keep an open mind. He's one of those teachers where you'll either love him or hate him.

One of those classes where his opinion weighs too heavily and your actual knowledge doesn't seem to as much. I read every book/reading, but I'm pretty sure I got destroyed because he didn't see me much in class. He's a nice guy though, so if you don't mind shmoozing with a nice guy on top of the readings and stuff, take it and shmooze away.

GREAT prof, truly cares about students and takes the time out to get to know you. Funny, clear, and always willing to help you at office hours. Group assignments and tests were hard, but only because he wants to test his students beyond a surface understanding of the material.

Quite possibly the worst class I have ever taken. He hardly teaches during class and when he does it is extremely boring; expects his students to do most of the teaching. If I could I would ask for my money back and for him to pay me. It's not how much you know in the class cause you don't learn anything, it's how much you kiss his butt

Simply one of the best courses offered here. This course requires a great deal of reading and writing, but what you get out of it is priceless. The grading scale is relatively generous. Prof. Reynolds belongs with the handful of amazing professors whom everyone loves.

Good teacher, easy to approach, clear and complete study guides. Reading for this class is more interesting than the reading for his Japan class. A little reading + going to most lectures = not too hard to do well in this class.
