Comment:

You can tell that given the choice Bates would not be teaching this class. He is good about encouraging and answering student questions in class. You have to work relatively hard and know the material to get a good grade. Overall he is a good guy and if you do what you are supposed to you will be fine.

Bates is very uncooperative in my experience. He changes the course to make it more difficult for students to succeed, even if they try. Not helpful at all. Avoid this prof!

Comment:

Loved his class. I was afraid of Organic Chem before entering, but he made it understandable and even applied it to real applications that made me consider lab work as a career path. He takes the time to answer all emails and welcomes questions in class. He puts old exams on his website to practice, do this and the real exams should be easy.

Comment:

Bates is a great prof, he teaches a very difficult subject for most and makes it understandable. Lecture slides are all posted on his page to go back and look over, 'readiness' quizzes for each chapter are available, and exams (with studying) are not bad at all. Provides in class examples and is very open to in class questions from students.

Comment:

A very, very good professor. He definitely knows his stuff and is very helpful. This is a professor that makes a relatively difficult and boring class interesting. He presents many real life applications which help students to remember vital information. Highly recommended.

Class was informal and easy-going. My only complaint was that there was not much graded material and I had no idea what my grade was going into the final project. Otherwise, I learned a lot, and enjoyed the low stress learning environment.

I think he is a great professor and he definately knows what he's teaching. Anything you ask him, during before or after class will probably end you in a 20 minute conversation. Always extremely helpful. The exams were easy if you made sure you did the book problems and the practice exams online.

Seems easy-going. This is bad, because quizzes are very tough, which is bad because it's 70% of the final grade. Expects ya to know everything. It takes a good deal of talent to do well.

Great Guy! Very approachable and always willing to help when questions are raised. Hard subject and material, and can only be briefly discussed in class (time permitting). Lots of self motivation is required to get through the material and know what you're doing.

He only goes into detail on things people specifically ask about... which sucks if you don't know enough about the subject to know what to ask about. Studying for his exams is near impossible... test averages were consistantly in the mid to low sixties. He's the kind of guy who expects you to read the entire text in your off time.

this guy comes off as an easy teacher then bam you fail the first exam. then you think you got it then BAM you fail the next exam and somehow you pass with a D. what is this? a lie he's easy
