Doug is a wonderful professor who puts his best into making sure we get as firm of a grasp on the course material as possible. This course is difficult, and you need to put in a good amount of work in order to do well. He's very helpful in his office hours, and his lectures are a load of fun for us, too. One of my favourite profs.

Doug is a great professor and he made phonology so interesting. Assignments are really difficult to do well on, I would really recommend going to his office hours as he can really help you work through the problems. Definitely take a class with Doug but be prepared to work hard for a good grade!

Doug has easily got to be one of the best professors I've had at UBC. His lectures are wonderful, he's extremely passionate about the subject, and he genuinely cares about students' learning. That being said, Doug's classes are set up to really make you sweat, so be prepared to work hard. Just be sure to stay on top of things and you'll be fine.

Great professor who takes a lot of time going thru student comments and provides good feedback on assignments, which are tough but reasonable. My major complaint about the course is that the best you will ever receive is A 87%. He does not give out A+ (despite having no mistakes on assignments) because A+s are reserved for above&beyond students.

I can't recommend Doug enough. You can tell that he's extremely knowledgeable and genuinely happy to respond to questions with specific and detailed answers, even about basic concepts. He's super organised, and his exams are fair. He has a very chill, patient attitude, wants you to do well, and will help you out if you ask.

Pulleyblank is one of the best professors you will ever find. The class is challenging but he will respond to emails and online discussion board quickly and has stayed past his office hours if people need help. He really cares about the students and how they are doing and sees them each as individuals. If you have the option, take his class!

Doug's the guy, plain and simple. The comment below says you work hard but he works harder, and I want to underscore just how true that is. There are few people I am more inspired by or even like as much as Doug. Meet him, talk to him, befriend him - it's worth it.

Doug is the single best professor I've had at UBC. He is so passionate about linguistics and hard working it made me love phonology and gave me joy to put in long hours late at night almost every night. I did well in his class because I worked really hard. But he worked harder. He is hilarious, persevering and as modest as a person could be.

I took LING 200 and LING 311 with him and I would love to take more of his courses. I wouldn't recommend skip any classes. Understand each step he presents in class is very crucial to assignment and exam. But don't be afraid. His lecture follows a clear step and easy to follow. And don't afraid to ask! He is extremely nice and friendly.

Came into this class with only rudimentary understanding of Ling & came out with plans to minor in it! didn't take the suggested prereqs and I'm not gonna lie - it was a bit hard. But Doug was always on the discussion board/gave lots of explanations - I found him to be quite helpful. Quizzes were easy but the assignments/finals were hard - careful!

Awesome lecturer! Really enjoyed this class. You do have to work for your grade, though that's not really a bad thing. That bein' said, some of the assignments were unreasonable...

I HIGHLY recommend you take Ling 100 before you take this class. I did not and had to work incredibly hard to get my grade. If you are going into Linguistics, however, this class is very informative and would probably be a good fit for you. If you just want a GPA booster class, don't take this one!!!

I loved Doug and this class. Great lectures filled with information and humor. I came into this class with a naive love for Linguistics and left with a fiery passion for phonology.

I took Ling 311 and 447 with him. He expects a lot and the assignments are crazy long and hard... 447 is all group projects and presentations...you'll do great if you get into a group that's good at phonology;

Really difficult assignments, he gives no notes and rarely does up an answer key to assignments. Basically had to decipher the ridiculous textbook...I usually get As in phonology but ended up with a B in this class.

I took Doug's 200, 311, and 447 classes. Favorite professor BY FAR! He has an interest in the subject and it shows through his teaching. Though the textbooks can be boring/hard to get through, that's true of ANY Linguistic Textbooks. The easiest and best reading he gave us was something that he, himself had written. Be prepared to work hard tho

He challenges you, but if you're going on linguistics, you'll understand why. Henry did the same thing in 201 afterwards, and then you take 311 and 300 and you get it: linguistics is just hard. Don't let that steer you away, it's a great field, but yes, you do need to work. Can't just expect an hour or two here and there will cut it. Good luck!

Impossible textbook (ladefoged), not much in terms of notes... just leaves you to take down important points of data analysis. Yes, he does expect you to know the material thoroughly and its hard to recover from falling behind. Midterms and quizzes ok, some assignments hard. Fun to be in class but didn't seem like time well spent
