Professor: Haiping Xu

Comment:
Homework is challenging, intentionally harder than the exams that are most of the grade. If you put in effort to understand the homework problems and read the relevant parts of the book, you will do well. He lectures heavily in class, posts nothing online, gives handouts in class, and takes attendance that is generally 5% of your grade. Go to class

Comment:
None of his course material is available online. In fact, he didn't update MyCourses or his website once the whole semester. When he gives out homework solutions he gives incomplete solutions for some, refuses to answer others at all. He speaks in a very quiet tone, which sucks if you aren't in the front row.

Comment:
His classes are usually tough. Conceptual Computer Science classes will make you think. That's not a bad thing. It's a challenge especially with the final being nearly half of your overall grade. If you pass and get something out of it, that's all that matters. He may very well change the way you approach CompSci as a whole.

best professor at CIS department. Helpful and intelligent, keep the class active and always check if the student get the material or no, for example, "yes or no" the famous funny question asked during the class!!

His style is outdated- he's not a PowerPoint guy and that doesn't work for a lot of students. If you show up to class ready to absorb what he's talking about you'll find he's actually a solid teacher who's more than willing to go over things multiple times, or at his office hours. If you want to play on your phone or computer, expect to do poorly.

Very good. Has an accent but easy to understand. For previous comments, he doesn't have to teach syntax in 181, that's what 180 was for. Haiping is friendly, and grades very fair.

This man cannot speak English. I find it near impossible to follow along with anything he is trying to teach. The fact that the teacher cannot communicate in the slightest degree only makes things worse.

If you have a good understanding of the concepts of CIS 180, Xu is great for 181.

Horrible accent. Bad teacher. Boring class. Labs are alright, quizes are rough, tests are way to hard. If you speak Chinese, This prof might be for you, otherwise DO NOT TAKE!

Haiping doesn't really speak English that well. One major problem with this class is that he doesn't teach much syntax at all... it's 90% concept and 10% code, which is a major problem when time for projects and labs comes around.
