Comment:
Dr. Calvert is incredibly smart and good moderator during class discussions. Four grades the whole semester so there is little margin for error, and there is a lot of information to cover in order to be prepared. That being said, Dr. Calvert is an excellent professor and I was generally excited to learn and attend class.

Super qualified professor who has been all over the middle east and shares his experiences which makes his lectures more interesting. His lectures still can be boring at times, but make sure instead of focusing on the slides you focus on what hes saying and write down as much as you can. Read the book for exams and answer questions in class

After my first year this is the only professor that I respect in the academic sense. He is an expert in the field of the Middle East and is not super boring. He teaches you a lot of things that are outside the class and uses personal stories to help you understand the culture. Read and study hard and you will do well. Map section on tests are hard.

He's definitely not the most accessible outside class, but nevertheless a fantastic teacher. Lazy people won't get an A, but it's not horribly difficult to do well in the class. Lectures are quite interesting.

Dr. Calvert's is an authority on middle eastern & islamic history. He fills his lectures with personal stories of his travels, historical account, and life advice. Class requires a fair amount of reading & studying, but nothing out of the ordinary. Best class i've taken at Creighton so far. 2 Exams, 1 Final Exam, 1 Final Paper, Discussion posts.

He's definitely a genius and one of the best teachers here, but there are two problems: 1. Your grade literally depends on just two exams and a final, two discussion posts, and a paper (so if you mess up on anyone of these, you will at best get a C or even fail). 2. He's pretty strict. And I won't lie, he's a pretty boring professor (has dry humor)

Professor Calvert really knows what he is talking about and made history interesting. His tests were alot of writing and slightly specific. In order to get the information you need for the test you have to attend lecture because his powerpoints do not make sense alone. Overall he prepares you well but you don't get many grades. Homework is minimal.

He's a very knowledgable professor. He's also nice in the way that he'll say hi to you if he sees you walking down the mall area. Though it's very easy to lose focus during class due to his soothing voice, try to pay attention because what he says is what you'll need to take notes on.

Very interesting teacher, he really knows his stuff. Difficult to understand subject matter, but he explains everything well if you listen. Two papers. Two Tests. One presentation. If you do the work you will do fine.

Really liked this professor, he knows what he's talking about and loves to help- so go see him! Don;t really have to read, but make sure you read his online summaries. He tells you exactly what is going to be on the test. one essay. two test. one Final. and participation points.

Easy class. The reviews in this thread say that his class requires the textbooks, but it doesn't really. Listen to what he's saying, and only read the textbook to supplement the information he gives. Interesting class, helpful teacher. Friendly. Take for an interesting History class.

Everyone should take a class taught by Dr. Calvert! Easily one of the best professors at Creighton. He's an expert in his field and you learn so much about the Middle East. He's not easy, but if you put in the time, you'll do well.

This class is amazing - you will learn so much about the middle east and what's going on there today. Sure it's a tough subject, and he teaches sometimes like an upper-level course, but it's not bad if you do the work. If you're wondering whether to take this class- do it. Calvert knows a lot about it and makes class really interesting.

Arab-Israeli Conflict class was so interesting. If you grew up knowing only one side, he does a great job of explaining the conflict and where it comes from. He is just a cool guy with a wealth of stories

Dr. Calvert really is a wonderful teacher. He does have an obsession with showing movie clips and Youtube vidoes. The are ususally pointless and boring. The tests are hard, but if you study, you will be fine. He is an all around really good guy, and always seems willing to talk about your grades, or really anything about the middle east.

Dr. Calvert is a great teacher! His tests were pretty hard and covered a lot of readings, but it is a college course. He was very helpful outside of class as long as you took the time to go see him.

4 books required-must read all. Way too much reading for this level course.Teaches like this 107 course is a 400 level. Doesn't return calls/msgs. Tough teacher-never clear what will be on tests. Thinks he's very hip. Obsessed w/UTube for clips that mean nothing. Thinks this class is your life's ambition. If you're Muslim, you'll be "in" w/prof.

Calvert definitely knows his stuff, but this class was not enjoyable at all. He comes off as a jerk because won't take time to learn anyone's name. Class was fairly difficult and pretty boring, but if you actually do the reading and study, it is much easier.

I took every class he offers and it was worth it. He's not the most helpful or approachable teacher and his pronunciation leaves a lot to be desired, but I learned so much from him and discovered that I really liked history. Participate in discussions and do the readings and you'll be fine.
