I loved his classes. This was the third class that I took with him (I also took Peoples of Siberia, Central Asia, and Turkey, and Languages of the World.) If you read the textbooks and follow his lectures carefully, you'll do fine. He's one of the best professors I have had!

A very difficult but fair professor. Tests are not always clearly explained, students have to think for themselves. There is no hand-holding. He can be opinionated, so you need a sense of humor to take this class.

Joseph Foster is not a typical "high school part-II" type professor we see so much of. He gives you enough information for you to take and then form your own understanding through a very little effort of connecting the dots to his points in class. Take notes, do the homework, and you will find this guy can open your mind in great ways.

Comment:
Deliberately tries to trick students by withholding information in lectures, asking extremely vague questions that require very specific answers for credit, and using the book not as a reference material but a source of opinions to discredit. He refuses to answer questions, uses only his opinions, and has said he'd like to kill his stupid students

Really enjoyed this class. He was very informative, and answered my questions readily. You will do well here as long as you come to class and pay attention. Taking notes will help. I cans ee how his humor can be offensive if you are overly sensitive. Get over it. Only issue is that on tests there is sometimes information he does not lecture about.

This is the PERFECT summary of Foster: "His lectures are pointless, nonsensical ramblings and his tests are unnecessarily in-depth" I could not say it better myself. I would add that he gets mad when no one will answer a question he asks in class, yet when someone does venture an answer or *gasp* a question, he gets very condescending and rude.

Comment:
Do not ever take this class as an elective, although it is offered for COB students for an "Area Studies" elective in Europe. Although it isn't mandatory, it's almost impossible to understand what this guy is talking about unless you have a prereq. His lectures are pointless, nonsensical ramblings and his tests are unnecessarily in-depth.

Dr. Foster is a brilliant professor who is interested in teaching students how to think for themselves. He will go out of his way to help you to help yourself but will not spoon feed you answers. His classes are hard, but he is giving you the tools to solve problems logically, which you will serve you well throughout your lifetime.

He knows the material like no other. He is not clear, his exams are impossible, he makes the students feel stupid by constantly making rude remarks, He knows his stuff, yes, but he is not good at teaching it

It takes a while to get used to him. By the second quarter I didn't mind him as much. He is pretty hard but a bloody genius. Be careful about asking questions because you will get long drawn out answers that make him go off on wild tangents.

Not for the faint of heart. Dr. Foster is tough, but fair. You do get what you deserve. Don't be offended by him or some of his ramblings, it's not worth sweating. This is college kiddies; check your opinions at the door.

He's not fair, he's not unfair. HE's a genius (phD and full professor by the age of 26) and doesn't understand that not everyone is on his level. And therefore, not everyone can follow his thought processes.

Awesome guy! He is opinionated, but as he often says he is an "equal opportunity offender" Learn not to take offense to anything he says. Very fair grader- you get what you deserve always. Also very helpful if you need it. VERY interested in helping students learn and think for themselves. Go out of your way to take him. He's awesome!

Foster wished us a "Happy Robert E. Lee" day and then made several references to hailing Hitler the rest of the quarter. He may be wishing to play the devil's advocate, but he should also remember that he isn't in Arkansas anymore.

Expects college-level work from college students. Emphasizes logic and critical thinking over opinion, which is as it should be in academia. Very fair. I wrote a 1 paragraph, 200 word essay and got a 94, while someone else wrote 1100 words and got a c -- a testament to the value of logic.
