Comment:
He's intimidating at first but his tests and papers are not very hard if you read the books and pay attention. He just wants to know you understand. Although the class was sometimes/often frustrating, he gave us a more complex understanding of the Republic than I think could be obtained from any other prof. Rewarding if ur prepared for a challenge.

I took Dr. Parens for Phil of Man. Honestly, I didn't learn very much from the class no looking back, but Dr. Parens works hard to break down the material, even though he knows it's boring. Attend all of the classes, if you take good notes you can pass the tests and papers easily. Fair grader!!

The most professional professor I have had?he makes everything crystal clear with handouts and diagrams, and will tell you exactly what each test and paper will cover. Nevertheless, as he told my class, he cannot make philosophy more interesting for us, and indeed, I found his class boring.

I've taken Dr. Parens for both Early Modern and Phil of Religion and plan on taking him again this coming semester (Trilogy)...he's an amazing professor and makes you work hard. He is an extremely fair grader and you learn a lot if you put the time and work into it.

You want a difficult semester? This is the one for you...Jesus, I mean I knew metaphsyics was a difficult read, but this guy shows you just how twisted the pathways of the philosophical mind can be. >_< Class with this man is certain to give you a massive headache...if not put you in a coma.

i believe this man was in an altered state while teaching my class the first day. he kept yelling "you're just going to think i'm a crazy jew" everytime he would make a reference to a christian philosopher. i didn't even notice the jewish part..

The worst professor ever. He is angry at everyone and everything. If you go to talk to him outside of class, he just scolds you and looks at you like you are stupid. He yells at the class when one student falls asleep. He won't answer questions in class, and laughs at you when you ask them.

One of the best classes and professors I've had at UD. This class is fascinating, Dr. Parens is brilliant, clear, and humorous, and he pushes you, in a healthy way, to your limits.

A brilliant, kind, and helpful man. I didn't get a thing out of his class, however. I don't think it was his fault, though -- I think I just don't get philosophy. He really bent over backwards to try to explain it.

An excellent teacher and a brilliant man, whenever the students seem to have difficulty understanding a thinker, blames himself rather than the class. One of the most outstanding professors on campus.
