Comment:
Dr. Rettig was an excellent professor for world literature. Most of your grade is based on 2 papers, but it's manageable since the feedback that she gives is really helpful. Go to class, read the books, and ask for help on your papers and you should succeed in this course.

Honestly, this class was an easy A. There are two main papers; one of which she gives you two chances to get feedback. The final paper is super easy; there are also two mini-essays that you basically get a 100% on for writing. She also lets you go 15 minutes early.

The reviews have her all wrong. She just changed the course so there are no reading quizzes. Two papers (one worth 50% and one final reflection paper). Even though the 50% paper seems scary, it's really not. You get 3 graded drafts before turning the final. Show up and participate. You get out of class atleast 15 min early. TAKE HER

Don't take her class. She is probably the least straightforward grader I have ever had in any class: her feedback consists of two vague critiques every time: a "narrower topic" and "more detailed explanation". My topic dealt with how a single element on the cover of a single album represented the theme of the album's music. Yet still was not narrow

This class was a nightmare. She doesn't respond to my emails and calls me out for anything in a mass email. She is very confusing in her assignments, so if you are not sherlock homes, good luck. Her favorite phrases are "Narrow Topic", "Detailed Examples" and no she will not define this for you. She expects students to know what she means vs says.

If you're a strong paper writer and public speaker, you'll thrive in the class. However, she isn't very clear in criteria for papers even if you go in and talk to her. I recommend waiting to take this class until after you have ENG150 and to utilize the writing center. It's not impossible to get an A, and she's a pretty cool person.

Dr. Rettig is a fantastic professor. She really cares about each student and will work with you as much as needed on papers, which is where much of your grade comes from. She does go over the syllabus quite a bit, but it's to help the students know what is coming up in the course. Such a kind lady and lets class out at least 15 min early each day.

You basically meet with a group for 15 min then spend the whole class on your laptop while she drones on and on about the book. I've tried paying attention but it's just her lecturing and I can't. Theres only 4 papers, no tests, so if you bomb them you're screwed. But she also gives you a ton of time for the papers and will work with you on them.

She is a nice lady and you do not need to do any work in class and can browse on your laptop. Her classes run 15-30 shorter than the syllabus says and you get a few days off for individual meetings. However, the papers are very long and she is a very tough grader. The average grade is a B so do NOT take if you are looking for an easy A.

I mean, she does give good feedback, but like that's about all. She's dry as a teacher, spends like 90% of the class going over directions only to say you could honestly do whatever you felt like, and is very vague with her instructions. On top of that, she is a harsh grader nonetheless. Do not take ENG170 with Rettig unless you hate yourself.

Dr. Rettig is a very special kind of teacher. Sure there's a lot of papers and she makes you work for your grade in the class, but she really cares about you if you if you put in the work. She is very helpful with papers if you go in and talk to her, most kids just don't want to do that. She's a really nice lady and a pretty cool person.

Very boring and unclear what she wants. She is very confusing when she gives directions and rambles for almost the entire period about nothing then makes you get into small groups and discuss readings. Not a hard grader though.

Comment:
DO NOT take ENG 170 for a critical issues course. Extremely tough grader, extremely picky, and doesn't like things that aren't her way in a research paper. Requires lots of going in to speak with her about the research paper which gets tedious. Emphasis on the PICKY, will not get a good grade if dont know what she wants, hard to be creative.

Dr. Rettig struggles with time management. She can go an entire 75 minute class period ranting about her Blueline page but will not let the students get involved. When she does let the students get involved, it is group work and she is very unclear as to what she wants the group to do. The entire class comes together to ask what she wants.

She doesn't clarify her expectations for the papers and when she gives "rubrics" they are unclear. You don't know what to expect when turning in a paper and her grammar grading is off. She is flexible with assigments but almost too flexible.

Although she didn't give out many assignments, she's not very clear in any of her directions. In papers, what you think is a lot of commentary is not enough. She likes lots of commentary. Her class is mostly her just talking and making something that could take five minutes to explain make it into twenty. Good luck if you're taking her class!

One of the nicest ladies at Creighton. That being said, also one of the most difficult English teachers I've taken. I've always gotten A's on papers, but she refuses to give an A no matter how good your first draft is. She looks for reasons to tear it apart, which is annoying. But she does let you redo everything her way. Very subjective.

The class is easy and she's a nice lady. However, she doesn't give good specificity on what she wants on your papers. Otherwise, the class is pretty boring and you don't really need to read the book because the discussions are more personal responses than from the text. Also, the beginning is laidback, but the papers can sneak up on you.

Took the accelerated night version of the class. Graded a lot on participation & little on work. Most of grade was from 1 term paper (which she lets you turn in then revise for higher grade) & 1 in-class presentation. She talks a lot about the plays; easily goes off on tangents but super nice lady. If you're a born writer, you'll get an A.

Maybe it's different because it was online, but I liked her. She let us write on whatever we wanted. She had us edit and write 3 essays (summer). I turned in my final early and she revised it and let me edit and turn it in again for a higher grade. Really helpful if you ask. Write about family/pets/personal instances. She seems to really like that.
