This class is for people who enjoy literature and learning. The lectures are informative and helpful towards the papers and exams. Gives extra readings that are optional, but I highly recommend them since they help your journey in reading the books. turn in papers early to get feedback. long lectures, but enjoyable

Insightful lectures and caring personality. If you're bored, lit classes aren't for you. Best professor I've ever had, but only for students who are passionate about literature.

I thought this class was going to be interesting but the professor made it really boring and especially taking the whole class time on Thursday nights. Get to ready to read novels each week and take a quiz. Although I'm not good at quizzes, doing the extra credit and doing good on the exams help.

This isn't a class that teaches you how to produce high quality papers. If you're already a strong writer and love to read, then this course is for you. Take advantage of the opportunity to turn in papers early for his advice. Attending class makes the papers much easier to write. 4 take-home papers and some in-class reading quizzes.

He's very passionate about literature but rambles. Hardly does class discussions which help a lot when he does. Watch out for Whitmanesque primitivism! As much as he tries, he does not explain some concepts very well. Make sure to turn in pieces of your work early so you know you're on the right track. And there's a ton of reading so keep up!

Dr Broer know his literature, and you will learn by taking his class. My problems with him is his impersonal nature in the way he conducts class. He does not take the time to get to know his students. His lectures are quite informitive, but boring. He hands out a lot of papers so be prepared

One of the most amazing professors I have had the privilege of learning under. His enthusiasm for the work is contagious and he is incredibly knowledgeable. He gives you a framework for the entire class and he takes great pride in his student̢۪s development. His class is a MUST

Broer is a scholar before he is a professor. I think this is great! You receive the opportunity to actually learn about the material you're covering instead of focusing on how to pass the tests. You can rewrite the papers (2/semester. If you have anything intelligent to say on the exams, he'll give you some credit. I'd take him again.

Dr. Broer could teach anywhere. Don't believe the people who wrote negatively about him, he wants his students to succeed. I went to visit him after class and he was trying to find ways to help a girl raise her grade who openly admitted to not reading the books OR doing the extra credit! He is a great person and knows everything about American Lit.

Very inconsistent during lectures. While his knowledge is plentiful he is not accepting of different or new opinions outside of his own. Rambles on forever about irrelevant things and tests on things he forgot to cover. Only take him if you have a strong grasp on literature and English in general. Do not reccomend if not an Eng. major.

Discriminates against any student that does not agree with him. Disrespects students to rest of class when absent. Does not stay on topic. Rambles.

LECTURE NOTES ARE IMPERATIVE FOR MIDTERM AND EXAMS. Excellent and interesting class. Tests were on everything we went over in class; did not give us anything we did not cover. Study the readings/notes and you'll be fine.

Broer is one of the greatest teachers I have learned from at USF. A true scholar, he knows the works he teaches in and out, and can not only apply it to the context of the period in which it was written, but can link it to today as well. USF is incredibly lucky to have him.

A professor who is passionate about the subject(s) he teaches. His lectures are sometimes hard to follow. Work load is reasonable. Two papers, midterm, and final. However, reading is essential! Overall, he is a good professor who truly enjoys teaching and sharing with his passionate.

Assigns One Book a week and requires two essays due the same week as the book it's written about. Seemed like a wonderful class to take if you have nothing else to do all semester, but for an average student it's an impossible workload.

Information filled professor. He can talk all night even when class needs to end. He knows Hemingway real well. I thought he talked too much about Hemingway and not enough about Vonnegut for my personal taste though. He doesn't require homework, just two 3 page essays, one midterm and one final. But make sure you know your assigned books.

Although enthusiastic, he lacks sensitivity to students' needs and feelings. He said many things that I considered to be **** and generally woman un-friendly. He read his essays to us for the entire class period and sometimes we didn't get to have class discussion. I was so disappointed in his teaching methods and his incapacity to listen to us.
