I changed my major because I hated this class so much. The syllabus was extremely unclear, but he never really followed it anyway. I'm pretty sure he just made things up before he got to class that day. He's intense about attendance though. The best part about this class was that it was taken over by a different professor halfway through the year.

Make sure you get the books. You NEED them. That is all you do in class. Read and present. Read and present. He never lectures and barely teaches you a thing. He wrote a syllabus, but we never followed it. Nobody ever had any idea what was going on. He is a VERY smart man and has a lot of knowledge, I just don't think teaching is right for him.

I dropped his class today - so I'm not speaking from a full term, but it's pretty much exactly why the other people have "meh" ratings of this guy too. SMART GUY, no question... I just don't think being a professor is his niche. I think he uses his tenure as an excuse not to teach, to be quite honest.

Prof. Simmons is a really nice guy, but not the best professor because most times he is unclear about things and is mysterious. Whenever he does talk about things, they are very enlightening and helpful. He does a lot for the community and probably just had a lot on his plate. Has potential to be a good prof. if he gave it 100%

The comments below me are all pretty realistic.. he is indeed a VERY smart man but obviously has a lot on his plate already that doesn't make him worlds greatest journalism professor..being that he tends to lose assignments(make sure to SAVE a copy of everything) has a hard time responding back to emails and is unclear with assignments..

Nice, interesting and full of African American text which was interesting. He doesnt respond to emails and is so unclear. I am STILL confused as to what that was all about! :0 Weird...Tough.

He's obviously a very smart man, but not cut out to be a professor. The first half of the semester, we did almost nothing, then were swamped with big projects right on top of exams. He's unclear with his assignments, and cancelled 5 classes and it only met once a week. Unfortunately, he's the only one who teaches some of the classes...

Worst professor I ever had. The material he taught was completely unrelated to the course topics, he cancelled about 1/4 of the classes and I almost didn't graduate on time because he failed to turn in his grades. I won't deny that he is a smart man, but he is unfit to teach.

He's a genuinely nice guy, and his heart is in the right place, but just not the best professor. He doesn't really abide by the syllabus AT ALL, so just make sure you do all of your assignments, turn them in, and attend the majority of the classes, and you'll be fine.

A genuinely nice guy but very unorganized. Pay no attention to the syllabus because you will not follow it until he makes a new one for the last two weeks of class. The class is pretty easy but you have to be there to find out what's due, either that or have a good e-mail contact from class.

Prof Simmons is a very smart man, however he isn't a great professor. In 215, you have to read 2 or more books about black men in journalism. That kind of got annoying and a lot of the assingments were about that too. So i you want an easy A and hear a lot of stories, then Prof Simmons is for you.

There was no law in the journalism and the law course that I took with him. There was lots of group discussions about Civil Rights and Liberties, and I learned a lot about black people. Not my favorite course ever, but it was a very easy A.

The class I signed up for was Columns, Editorials & Reviews. Instead, I got the status of the Black man in America. Nothing we did had any relavence to journalism. While he may be a very smart man, he was able to transfer absolutely none of his journalism knowledge to us. I learned a lot abou the African American culture, but not much else.

The man's a nice, community-minded activist type, but one of the worst teachers ever. He won't babysit you, but he'll give whatever crap you turn in an A. Don't take classes from him if you want to learn anything.

An amazingly experienced an knowledgable man. A true assett to the department. But no the greatest professor. He doens't run the tightest ship. He is not unreasonable, but don't expect to have you hand held and be babysat.
