Literally the worst teacher ever. Is the worst at explaining the material when it's time to do projects/essays. One of the stupidest things we did was write out a music video, that was heavily detailed in symbolism and visuals. She's a decent human being, but if you're considering on taking her FYS, 0 stars on Yelp; 0/10, would not recommend

Comment:

I loved this class and her passion for the subject. You have to take notes on what she says in class, the readings are less important than lectures for quizzes. The workload is minimal, but she does expect you to synthesize what she says in class and make connections. Ask questions, she loves participation!

Dr. Shaw appears very disorganized with her work, as it can take her forever to give back your papers and she may email you homework the night before at 11 pm. Don't let this fool you as she can be a harsh grader, and she does not give specific instructions on a paper. She is very passionate about her subject however , and it's an easy work load.

She is crazy! She is a hard grader and basically grades terribly..she can be super rude. She is very unhelpful and gets mad at students for no reason. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!

This was supposed to be a fun class but she ruined it for me. She is looking for you to repeat exactly what she said in class and she takes off unnecessary points when you don't. She speaks really fast and its hard to write down every detail that she says. She doesn't post any notes to help you study for her tests.

I have no idea why id didn't read the reviews on her prior to taking this class. Don't make the mistake I did. She doesn't explain the concepts and just talks about the gods and goddesses and just assumes you can tie everything together. She thinks she is the most knowledgeable person of Indian religions because she lived in India for two years..

She is just the worst professor. She feels like she knows a lot about the region because she has lived there for couple of years. I feel like she knows only about the gods that she teaches and for the rest she has no idea. she is not helpful at all and i dont know why she is even teaching??? She doesnt know how to. The best professor I had at U of R...hands down. Even though I graduated several years ago, I still think back on her classes as the most interesting I took. She is a dynamic, incredible lady and so passionate about her teachings. Highly recommend!

WOW she really shouldn't be teaching this class. Honestly if you haven't been to more than two parts of India... no matter how much you know about the religion... you should not be teaching a class. I asked her about a specific god and she said "we won't be studying him because he's not really importan" seriously?! don't take her. I was dissapointe

shaw is definitely wacky - but if you expect it, it's highly entertaining. don't start packing up your things while she's still talking, unless you want to see her flip out (which can be quite funny). she is very set in her views so don't challenge her, but she also knows a lot and can teach you so much about hinduism.

I had Dr. Shaw's class several years ago, and as I look back at my experience at UR, it was my favorite class. She is extremely interesting, as is the subject matter. I am currently working on my Ph.D and I can only hope to be as passionate about teaching as she is.

I've got to agree with the negative comments.. she turned a really interesting topic into a see-how-much-you-can-agree-with-me contest. I've never had a prof. with such an obvious agenda, or one less tolerant of diverse views.
