Comment:
He's a wonderful person but a terrible professor. The material is complicated, his lectures are all over the place, and his grading is confusing. I felt like I understood LESS after every class. He's a kind person and wants the best for his students but he really should not be a professor.

I've taken 3 of his classes and though he's not good at lecturing (I think he knows this about himself), he's amazing outside of the classroom. He genuinely wants his students to succeed and actually GETS that you take other classes too. Whether you need one-on-one help, an extra assignment, whatever, he's willing to make it happen.

Comment:
Hagstrom is brilliant and a very helpful, kind person, but his teaching style is an absolute mess. His handwriting is so far beyond illegible and his thought process is like a series of open parentheses that all get closed 1 minute before class ends. Numerous digressions. Frenzied proofs. Needs a chill pill.

Comment:
Hagstrom is a great guy, but not overall a great professor. Some of the material that he covers is difficult to understand, and he is not able to get it across easily. If someone asks him a question, he fumbles with it, gets a bit sidetracked as well. He'll help out as much as he can in office hours though, which was a good thing.

Comment:
I was really worried about taking this class as LX 522 was originally a pre-req, which I had not taken. That req was dropped, but it was still pre-supposed in some way. But Hagstrom worked around that and made the class interesting for everyone, regardless of their background. It takes a while to get used to his scatterbrainness, though.

Great guy; willing to do whatever you need to help you. His slides are great, and you must have them to understand the material, because he can't verbalize himself clearly. Whatever you do, don't get behind. Homeworks are really long and really hard-expect to spend hours on them. Do them and you'll get a good grade in the class. Go to his office1

Gives handouts for every class, excellent website, extremely helpful in office hours, and a very dedicated teacher. He knows his stuff, but sometimes it's hard to follow him in class. I'm impressed by how much work he does for this class. Great guy overall.

Hagstrom is the hardest working prof at BU. Extremely good in his field. His classes have been very valuable. Even though it may seem he is not making sense during lecture, if you actually pay attention, he explains stuff really well.

I wish I could have taken all of the classes taught by Paul as I found him a good instructor, oft willing to entertain questions. If you have difficulty following long sentences and tangents, you may be confused, but if you're on track, you'll do well.

homework and his powerpoint photocopies are good enough to pass the class with; lectures, textbook unnecessary, may make you more confused.

Paul is a great teacher, so long as he's not in class. In front of his students, he is extremely inarticulate, but via email or on the course weblog, he is concise and explains things thoroughly. I'd wager that it is only because of the site that we pass.
