Comment:
100% would not recommend taking Deming. His style of teaching is unorganized, & he often skips many steps (assuming we know how to do it already). He is condescending & teaches a gen class with methods we are not supposed to learn until q chem & ochem. I read the book as well as studied for hours but his tests were so unpredictable. SI held me tons

DO NOT TAKE HIM. He tells his student's, "I'm not here to teach you, read the book." He insults the class during every lecture. If you are not good in math, do not take him. He will assume you have an understanding of calculus. Go to his office hours? He'll hurt your feelings. Heard SI helps. Just read. If you do get stuck with him; I'm sorry.

I love chem but this class was one of the hardest classes I've taken. I went to lecture every week and still barely passed with a C. He lectures old school, no power point, no organized outline, just straight lecturing from his mouth. Lecture was pointless! So hard to follow along with what he's saying. Literally had to learn everything on my own.

Honestly, people who give him a bad review didn't try hard enough. I sat through the whole semester listening to people whine about how bad he is at teaching, but it wasn't bad. He expects a lot. Put in the effort, you'll get a good grade; ESPECIALLY since he curves so much bc of people who complain about his teaching and fail based on that.

Dr. D. is very knowledgeable about his stuff and he seems to be a great chemist. However, his teaching style is rather random and unpredicted. There are no PowerPoint slides and he writes random notes from the top of his head. Also, he gets upset if you don't come prepared to class and participate. Definitely read the textbook, and he curves a lot!

He's a nice guy He's amazingly smart Class IS HARD! Be prepared to get your first F on your exam. Exams are not created from lectures. No power-points, the only notes you get are random problems he does on the board.

Worst professor ever! I stopped going to his lectures half way through the semester. I would just sit there because he is so hard to understand. my notes never made any sense because he is not clear on what he teaching. I had to teach my self EVERYTHING from the book, but his tests were so different from the book. he curves ALOT! only plus side.

3 midterms, 1 final. I recommend to do masterchemistry before midterm, go to SI sessions and lecture bc it honestly helps you out, well for me it did. For midterms, it's mostly based on work problems and definitions. His class is not that bad if you honestly study really hard. Read the book and take good notes!!!!!

He should stick with doing research and working in a lab. Teaching is not for him. He is impatient with students. He erases his work while you're trying to read and make sense of what he's writing on the board so you can't even follow along as he does problems. He does not explain clearly what he is doing step by step for the complex problems.

Comment:
For chem 120B, his ability to communicate through his lectures is extremely poor. Half way through a problem, which aren't labeled for the type of problem he's doing, he erases his work through following steps, making understanding anything even more difficult. there is no lineage to his lectures.

This class was quite interesting. Dr. Deeming focuses on the calculations which in part are beneficial for understanding come the test. The exams are about 8-9 problems and difficulty ranges from simplistic to complex. Come to lecture prepared by reading text and do mastering chemistry ahead of time! I received a B I'm sure you can do better!!

Dr. Deming is a great professor. He expects you to read the book and come to class prepared. If you don't understand something then ASK QUESTIONS! This class is very reasonable. Read the book, do the problems, and pay attention in class. If you do those three things you will be fine.

Comment:
Dr. Deming is a fine professor and his class is extremely manageable. He expects you to know the book well and will not review many points. His lectures often approach topics from a different angle than the book. As long as you are committed to the practice problems after the chapter, and review those he did in classs, the exams are VERY fair.
