He is possibly the most intelligent man I have ever met. He loves to teach, and it shows. --Pivotal in declaring my emphasis as a grad student. I suggest that students who take him go to his office hours and ask him about what was discussed in class. He loves to shoot the breeze and will reward you for being his audience :)

I was working full time when I took his class and couldn't do all the readings. I didn't do as well as I should have. But the lectures were so amazing, that over the next two years, I caught up on everything I should have read. Now I understand: he is the greatest professor I've ever had. He took me in new directions, and I am forever grateful.

One of the worst teacher's I've ever had. Does not go over the material EVER. He is a hard grader. Which is something I don't mind as long as he can TEACH. If he doesn't Teach than he should not be grading hard. You can't TEACH and GRADE HARD at the same time. STAY AWAY from him.

Not helpful. Doesn't reply to emails. Harsh grader. Very intimidating. LOTS and LOTS of material, but scattered and unorganized class and syllabus. He's retired, but teachers occassionally. If you have a chance to take him, DON'T. This is coming from a 3.8 student.

This class is only for those who are not lazy!lots of reading!, hard grader, He is difficult, but we're at the University level, it should be hard. Id recommend him because one learns so much and hes very funny. He knows the material he teaches is bland, so hes always crackin' jokes to keep us awake. Take him,he will help you grow as a student.

He is one of the most demanding professors you will ever have. That being said, I learned more in his classes than in anyone else's. And, I learned more talking to him between classes and in office hours than in class. He's a very wise man, tells it like it is, and is uncompromising when it comes to the quality of his teaching.

Comment:

Chianese is interesting and animated. His liberal views sometimes gets in the way of lecture & you'll either have to listen to him or get him back on course. He welcomes class participation, and I advise to speak your mind. Learned a great deal in class and the material wasn't hard. Two major papers and in-class quizes. Somewhat fair grader.

Took 3 classes from him. Tough, but will bring the best out of you, challenge you to back up what you believe and encourage you to see things in a new way. His Men's Lit course saved students' relationships with fathers/boyfriends/husbands. Avoid if threatened by intelligent challenges to ideas.

yes, he takes getting used to. No, he is not easy at all. Yes, he brings up hot topics to get people talking. Yes, I hated him the first class I took from him. But once I figured out how hard I had to work (very), and began to be open with my opinions in class, I found he is the absolute best.
