Good class. If you actually do the readings the class is much more meaningful. It really does make a difference.

3200: New Media and Society was a great course. Tarleton is very interested in this subject, and did a great job fostering dialogue in the class, which is essentially an overcrowded seminar-style class. Do the readings before the midterm, as that is the only time you are actually held accountable for them.

Gillespie is great. He tries to keep lectures entertaining and interesting with relevant examples. Even if you are not a Comm major, the class will open your eyes to some really cool stuff. You don't really need the book but pay attention in class. Yes, he posts the slides on BB...but often what he SAYS during lecture is extremely important.

Good lecturer. Approachable & down to earth. Take home exams. Take notes on the textbook theories, and complete exams like an actual test - use your notes. Do NOT write essays; a poor grade will result. Verbal points stressed in class provide insight on exams. Most of the reading outside of the text will not be of consequence on the exams.

The class is too abstract. It's hard to keep up with the class and the reading is too dry and confusing. The TAs are not helpful and I do not recommend taking this class. It's not the type of media course you think it is...

You have 2 midterms, a final, and weekly blog posts. The blogs are just for credit, although he expects them to be really thought out and abstract. Discussions are forced and you basically do the readings to write your papers. It's an OK class, but too abstract.

Wonderful professor. Really have trouble understanding some of the comments made, particularly those about his lack of effort and bias against students. That was the polar opposite of my experience in the same class, found him to be very interesting, dedicated, helpful, and friendly at all times.

Egotistical jerk who likes to hear himself talk, ridiculous biased against students, unfair grader when HE put no effort into the course. The only good thing I can say is the torturous class is over.

All in all the class is very interesting and engaging. I agree that he repeats stuff, but it usually leads to another point, and sometimes it's nice to have the points repeated because it validates them. Overall he's a good professor & it's a good class.
