Comment:

Good teacher. He helps make the history of China somewhat interesting. However, he has unrealistic expectations for the midterm and final. Mid-term and Final are timed essays in which you must memorize ande elaborate on huge topics. You dont even have enough time to write down half of the things he expects you to cover in order for you to get an A.

Excellent teacher. He is a bit ecentric but not in a bad way. He explains things well, and is very helpful with essays and class work. He wants you to succeed and makes that very evident. I thought his grading was fair. Best of all you can expect him to grade the same way every time.

His tests don't seem that hard if you just listen in class and briefly read the material. I take very few notes, though he says too. However, do take notes when it comes to the essay tests. He wants you to know A LOT of information about three different subjects, even though you'll only be tested on one. As a person, he is pretty cool.

I took McLuen in a learning community, so it was three classes combined into one. The subject was China...so I learned a ton about Chinese history, which some might know, dates back aloooong ways, so there was plenty to learn. He is an awesome, caring, wonderful teacher. I hate history but he made it very enjoyable and interesting.

Get ready to read, because there's a lot to cover, and about the same ammount to remember. The tests are killer, but the lectures are lively, and you can tell he's passionate about the subject. He's extremely approachable. Get notes if you miss class (don't miss class), and don't fall behind in the book, because it's all on the tests. Tests=Grade

(+122) McLuen is one of the best teachers here-always eager to teach and be available to help/clear things up. Tests are hard but go to each class, take good notes and know most of the book material and you will be fine. YOU ARE ONLY GRADED on tests so watch out cause a bad one will kill your GPA, I believe he helped prepare me for 'real' college

Loved his class. He looks at the concepts and the major points in history.Dates and names don't need to be memorized.Attendance not required, but you'll fail the test if you aren't there most the time.Tests are all multiple choice, but don't be fooled- they are HARD tests.He tests on the book but mostly on what we talked about in class. TAKE NOTES!

Judged in terms of the sheer volume of information taught in a class, McLuen is defintely among the top-tier of teachers here at SFCC. But I liked that. He took time to explain everything from multiple angles and managed to give it all meaning and relevance to today. If you want to learn something, take his class, but be prepared to work very hard.

McLuen is an energetic, passionate teacher. It's hard not to like him. He goes all out on what he's teaching, and you learn so much about all kinds of things like trade, economics, etc-not just history. Be sure you read and pay attention in class! His tests are really hard! Besides that, this has been one of my favorite classes

WONDERFUL TEACHER!! Easy because of no homework, but hard because of his tests. Take class notes and read and you should be fine. Allows extra credit and seems truly passionate about History. Very funny too. Wants students to understand ALL sides of history, which I really respect. tests are hard, but it's college- DEAL WITH IT!!! (I recommend him)

He's kind of a strange fellow, but a good history professor. I really respected the fact that although he was somewhat liberal in his views, that he was willing to truly discuss and be open to other views and interpretations of the history covered in class. I would reccomend him - in fact I took a second class from him.
