Comment:

Professor Wolpa is super passionate about art. Great because he's an art prof, not great because he was NOT meant to teach English. His grading was awful - I found x's over entire pages telling me to delete stuff he didn't like from my assignments. He gave super vague directions all the time. Asking for clarification made it worse. Never take him.

All around terrible prof. He's suppose to teach art, and it was easy to tell in class. He shoved art in our faces all the time, making lots of assignments about art. He shuts down all your ideas immediately, and his grading is utterly ridiculous. I don't know why Calvin even let him teach an English class . Never take him, ever.

Why arr they, the college, letting him teach English 101. He's a complete bigot! He immediately shoots down most of your ideas. He also shoves down art in your throat and makes you do assignments considering art. I totally understand that he is an art professor, he just needs to stick to art and not English. Never take him.

Wolpa gave vague instructions that he refused to clarify. He often left the room halfway though a class (while students were working) and did not return. A very negative, offensive prof who directly insulted student work. When students presented their pieces to the class, he forced them to publicly rank each other's work and select the worst piece.

Couldn't stand him for visual culture, but for drawing, i think he was great. He definitely has a unique way of teaching, and you do a lot of interesting things. He expects a lot from you, definitely. But show up to class and make sure he can tell you put a lot of effort/thought into things and you're good.

well..he's a great prof. very...interesting. if you're planning to take his drawing class, don't. he believes in "temporary art". long story short, you end up with 2 giant erased pieces of paper by the end of the semester. you have to erase all of your work, and if you really like it, too bad. try to avoid unless you want to lose all your hard work

Wolpa is an amazing prof. The only reason others have given him such low ratings is because they are probably not art students and came into the course thinking that it would be an easy core class. He expects a lot out of his students and wants you to think about the class and its content.

I can't ever decide if I love him or hate him. He's often very hard to understand because he cares too much about sounding intelligent, rather than really helping you understand. He's a tough grader. He doesn't seem very approachable at first, very critical, expresses his own opinions often. But he can also be very interesting . Who knows.

Wolpa should be avoided at all cost. He is the one of the worst professors at calvin, and in his attempts at being genuine he feeds propaganda down his students throats. This is not art people, art promotes freedom and thought, Wolpa tells you what to think.

Wolpa is one of the greatest professors I've had at Calvin. Very knowledgeable. He may sound vague at first, but it's because he wants you to think about it for yourself rather than tell you what to think. He knows his stuff and when you need help, you can always approach him and ask and will always help. He is very unique and original.

DO NOT TAKE WOLPA! By far the worst prof I have had so far. He is ridiculously vague and forces his opinions down your throat. Lots of pointless reading too. Before this class i really enjoyed art and photography, but because of Wolpa i dont think I will ever take an art class again.

Wolpa is a great prof! He's really interesting and cares about art. He expects a lot out of his students and you really have to work hard on the projects. Also, there's a lot of boring, incomprehensible reading required for this class. But overall, even though this class was difficult I really got a lot out of it. Would definitely take him again!

Such a horrible prof! I was completely excited for this class, but it's not possible to understand what he wants half the time. If at all possible, take the class with ANY other prof. He makes the class more complicated than it should be. As for assignments, if he doesn't agree with them, even if they're correct, you're screwed.

wolpa is the BIG DOG, he will really make it clear that you are responsible for doing the work, and HE is there to help YOU. Overall, he is helpful in both getting very academic about contemporary art, yet also keeps it loose! is very sincere in the scholarship dept. ie. dont forget to put the work in!!!
