He's by far the most inspirational professor that I have had at Cal. He is older now, but in his young days he was a Civil Rights activist and he even met Rosa Parks! He received his PhD from Harvard and his level of knowledge is immense. His sociological theory and teachings opens your eyes about society and changes the way you view life forever.

Professor Barlow is such a caring professor and cares about what his students think. Don't be afraid to speak out in class, whether its about the workload, or a different opinion from Barlow- he doesn't get upset. He is there to help you succeed. Even though he jokes about being an "old white guy", he is powerful and inspirational!

Probably the most lenient and understanding professor I had at Cal. Attendance was not taken and he uploads all recorded lectures to YouTube if you miss! Absolutely no excuse to get an A in the class. Barlow also has been a passionate civil rights advocate his whole life and has great insight to share from personal experience. Def would recommend

Prof. Barlow was really helpful at explaining theory and making the concepts easy to understand. Sociology of Law is not an easy class, but he makes it fun and interesting with his examples and teaching methods. I recommend him 100% He also loves transfer students stories.

He is definitely dedicated to his work and is a very inspirational professor. The entire class was motivated by him during and after lecture. The essays are mostly based off of the readings. He can go off topic for an hour before he returns to the course material. My only complain was that he was not specific when it came to questions on the exams

LOVE Prof. Barlow! Lectures are clear, readings are interesting, encourages class participation, and breaks down complex ideas, making them easy to grasp. One thing is he sometimes shows a hint of arrogance in his opinions, but I forgive him. ;-P Hands down, one of the best profs I've ever had. Take Econ & Society, you'll want to go to class!

Barlow is a very passionate lecturer and has an interesting biography. Class always inspired me to think again about opinions and concepts I held before. He is quite liberal. Excellent assigned readings, which I enjoyed reading very much. Harder readings are well-introduced and explained during lecture.

One of the most influential professor I've by far! I actually took two semesters in a row with him. He tells it like it is; has a compassionate lecturing style that I appreciate..and I have a low-key intellectual crush on him. :)

If you've never taken a sociology class or very few, I'd highly recommend waiting to take Barlow's soc of race and ethnicity class. The GSI's grade hard and there is a lot of information to cover. With that said, I learned so much from this course! Barlow teaches a lot in narratives that are interesting to hear.

The guy preaches, and does not want any scholarship--he wants his own opinion back. If you have a different one, you are simply "wrong". How can opinion be wrong?!

tries to impress you with his knowledge, over talks you, self opinionated, carried away with his own self importance, doesn't listen to any one else but himself, very presumptuous, hates to be challenged, arrogant, He is GOD with a capital G. you really come away with the feeling you haven't been heard or listened to.

I can't recommend this professor in all honesty, Barlow preaches his opinion, and that is all he wants to hear back. Somehow Soc of law became soc. of race and ethnicity.

I do not like Barlow at all! I'm usually really forgiving in opinions of professors, but you don't learn anything but his opinion. I'm a moderate person, but he makes me look like a fascist. AVOID! Hands down the worst I've had at Cal
