Comment:

She loves all things German, esp. Wagner & Liszt. She subtitled her Richard Wagner seminar "Sex, Drugs, Felonies & Fallacies". Her lectures were very interesting, and she told GREAT stories. Half the class was spent listening to and watching opera, mostly the Ring Cycle. Assignments were basically scavenger hunts. Final exam was on Ring excerpts.

Comment:

She clearly knows a lot about music. However, I am not sure how clear she is able to convey her knowledge to the class. The work load is way too intense. She tests random knowledge in the exams, and can get very moody and grumpy during class. I was actually really excited about the class, but she managed to put me off the subject.

First off, there is way too much work for a MAP course. I wrote over 50 pages for this course. Papers, lectures, exams, and readings/viewings completely unrelated to each other. Hard listening IDs on the exams. Take only if you're prepared to memorize hours upon hours of German operas and fight with other students over microfilm and books in Bobst.

Rena is awesome. Her lectures are extremely informative and she makes hilariously ****y comments about dead composers pretty frequently. Attendance pretty mandatory but I never had the desire to skip her class.

Rena is the best teacher anyone could ever ask for. Her knowledge covers all of the period you study. The music assigned is usually a wonderful explanation of that artist and she retains a wealth of knowledge which she is all to willing to pile on you. One of the best professors NYU has to offer.

Rena Mueller is so nasty it is almost incomrehensible. She treats us like we're in the 10th grade...she won't even let people go to the bathroom! Sorry to break it to ya, honey, but your music class has nothing to do with my communications degree.

Horrid horrid teacher. the class just sucks.more than once she asigned hundreds of pages of reading and hours and hours upon video watching and music listening over a 2 day period. If you know german, shell love you. Not easy on the eyes and her perfume is EXTREMELY overbearing. pretty easy to grab an A- if you can stand it. i couldnt.

way too much work for a MAP class, she assigns something for a week later, and expects you to know it now. and unless you've been studying orchestra for years, you'll never hear anything she's talking about. all the listening is at the library. the reading and lectures cover material that is only distantly related to the music

Worst teacher I've had at NYU, hands down. Class terribly boring and assignments and grading extremely unclear. I tried to seek help and clarity all semester long, and she would not give it. She's teaching something that should be very interesting, and she manages to make it horribly boring.

This woman is insane. She has no capacity for making the materiel interesting, and she does not let people leave the room FOR ANY REASON during class. The exams are pretty easy, but the class is not enjoyable. She's an odd duck. Think Ursula from The Little Mermaid. On uppers.
