Knowledgeable history professor who gives meaning to the word "seminar". First half of the course is weekly discussions about entire books, 2nd half is to focus on a 20+ page paper due at the end of the term. Can test your understanding of history but be prepared to read 1-2 hundred pages a week.

Nice, helpful and enjoys discussion as part of class and tries to organize debates. Got to do his readings and listen to his lectures. Reading gives extra details but lectures tell you exactly what to focus on. Only grade in class are the 3 exam grades, but they are essay ones and he gives you the prompts 2 days before, so prepare and you're good

I did not buy the textbooks or do any of the readings, and got an A- by attending lecture and paying attention. He did cancel the final exam with very little warning and did not record lectures, which would be my only criticism. He gives out the essay topics before the tests, which is nice to be able to prepare.

The course is easy. If you just want to fulfill the HUB credit, this is the one for you. He gives out essay topics two days before the exams, so you have enough time to prepare it. Lectures and readings are helpful, but you don't really have to read them all.

He is a genuine and caring person, but only an ok professor. The exams are just one essay and make up your entire grade. The lectures are pretty dry and there is little class participation. You can either go to lectures or do the reading, but you definitely don't need to do both.

I really enjoyed his class! It was super informative and fun. His style of lecture is difficult, since he doesn't use any visual guides or hand out anything so you can follow along, but you get used to it eventually. He gives you exam questions ahead of time and lets you prepare. You can tell he's just a great person.

One of the kindest and most understanding professors at BU. The grad seminar class's entire grade was essentially based on a 25-paged early. Start early, take it seriously, do real research, go to office hours, and there's no reason why you won't do fine. He's very nice but also very effective in giving feedback.

Was awesome, and gives exam questions beforehand. Final was optional this semester. Was a little too hands off, you don't have to attend class which is nice but the TF essentially runs the whole shebang and is the only one that has a hand in your final grade so just hope you have someone nice and not a hardass.

Gives 3 exams during the semester. He gives out the exam questions prior to exam. His finals is optional. Yes, FINAL is the OPTIONAL exam.

David Mayers is a genuine, kind professor. Grade all from the 3 essay exams, but he gave out the questions beforehand so you had time to prepare. Lecture is helpful but not all that mandatory. More supplemental in my eyes. Overall not a very tough class, but a great professor and a cool subject. You definitely get what you give.

He believes in his students & makes "averyone" feel like their opinions matter. For 578 most of the grade was an essay (to be expected for a seminar) but he basically let you pick whatever you want. My only complaint is he is too nice with feedback outside of class, something that didn't translate into his grading and the 3hr class was longwinded.

He is a very nice man. However, the class is extremely boring and longwinded. It is completely discussion based, which isn't really helpful. He is extremely disorganized. It's a pretty easy class, but you probably won't learn very much.

I love Mayers! He's a nice guy who loves what he's talking about. He's very knowledgeable and really tries to get to know his students. As long as you attend the lectures, you'll be fine for the tests (he gives out the questions ahead of time). I'd say buy the books, but you don't have to read them. They're good context when studying for tests

Hysterical professor. Love him! Extremely knowledgeable about the subject. Lectures are a bit boring, but you really don't have to go. He gives you the exam questions before the test. Just study for them and write out practice responses and you will get an A.

There is a lot of reading for this class and the syllabus is unclear. Lectures can be both interesting or boring. Mayers is a very knowledgeable and nice guy but, lectures are just him talking the whole time. Discussions were great and Johan was an awesome TF! Mayers does give you the essay questions before the tests- so it is easy to prepare.

Great for a 20-person discussion. A challenging grader, but he responds to students' thoughts individually and clearly. I have no idea how he is for a large lecture course, but for HI 200, He's definitely top of the list. Good choice of books for the course as well.

professor mayers - he is very knowledgeable [sp] lots of fun in class - he's a sheriff who should have been an outlaw - [ maybe he is ] if anything the man is cloaked in mystery - enough about the man - the class - lots of fun - makes the material intriguing -he's helpful, accesible, smart funny - he's got it all
