Brown was a wonderful advisor, teacher and overall human being. He opened my eyes to the many ways in which biology is connected to other subjects as a first year, and I will never forget the lessons I have learned from him. He will be deeply missed by me and the many many many others he has impacted at Grinnell College.

The title of the course was Envisioning Nature, but it was far from the description given. He asigned heavy amounts of reading that had no relation to the topic of the class. He also is one of the toughest paper graders I have ever had. He expects a lot from students and does not give you the necesarry tools to meet those expectations.

Comment:
Prof. Brown has a peculiar way of grading things (especially tests) that is super accurate at measuring how well a student understands the concept, which makes his class a little bit of a challenge. He is good at teaching large concepts, but you definitely need to put in a lot of your own work. He is also very chill and easy to talk to!

Professor Brown gives good lectures, really loves what he does and is accessible outside of class. However, he is not the Prof you are looking for if you're a first year trying to adapt. He is a REALLY tough grader and makes you work so hard. It is not easy to understand what he's asking sometimes, and he cares a lot about general concepts.

He's a very tough grader but he is willing to talk about exams/homework/etc. outside of class. However, he is very busy and it can be difficult to schedule a time to meet.

Professor Brown is a great person and teacher. He expects a lot from his students, but is absolutely available and committed to helping them succeed. He mixes it up during lectures, incorporating various strategies (ie discussion, group work, powerpoint) to keep things interesting.

He was a very hard professor and rarely encouraging. I agree with the common opinion that he is smart and good at synthesizing different types of information but you still never know what to expect on his tests and even if you think you know, he's very picky about wording and usually finds ways to take off lots of points.

He's an awkward professor and sometime spends too much time explaining minute details. But, he can be helpful if you talk with him out of class.

He was by far the worse professor I ever had in my life. His expectations on homework, quizzes, and tests were unclear. Meanwhile, his grading was very tough. I would not recommend Professor Brown because although he knows a lot, he is very arrogant and not encouraging.

He takes tutorial way to seriously, and isn't a terribly useful adviser. somewhat intimidating, awkward and snarky. while the awkward and snarky are good, it's not so valuable to pair those with intimidation. yeah. be forewarned.

If you're the kind of student who benefits from structure and clarity, Prof. Brown is not the professor for you. I never learned what his expectations were for learning and he gave no hint of what material would be on the tests, whatsoever. Even when I approached him after class he refused to clarify issues for me. Ugh!

Extremely awkward, but a really nice guy. I can't say I liked the way the class was structured, but he made the material interesting. He can lecture well, but it great at helping out with field work.

Tutorial was unexpectedly awkward, but discussions were sort of interesting. As an advisor, though, you need a game plan if you want to take the classes you like. Prof Brown is way into well-roundedness.

The tutorial topic was incredibly interesting, and the readings were always engaging. There were many awkward silences and lulls in the discussions. Often seemed as though there was no humor in the class.

A pretty interesting class. He's a good advisor overall. Our tutorial was kind of awkward and sometimes I couldn't tell if he liked us. He almost forgot to buy us dinner. But other than that tutorial was ok, and I think I'll miss it.
