Great professor, really cannot think of a more caring and genuine professor. I was originally only going to sit-in on Jim's class for fun, but I ended up immediately enrolling after the first lecture because he got me so excited to learn about linguistics. I really cannot thank Jim enough for all the knowledge he has imparted on the class

He's so good! He's sooo good! Here's why. He explains the subject matter at a level where it's easy to understand yet academically challenging. He respects all input. He genuinely cares for his students. He approaches everyone with kindness and admiration, at a professional level. Finally, he has a sick and hear-lovin' accent. The dude's adorbs.

Hate syntax, but he made me love it! Know that the quarter you take this class you'll be trading in sleep for hw time, but it's worth it. He's extremely friendly and upbeat and always willing to help and is truly passionate about syntax. Spent 15+ hours per week on this class. Attendance optional, but you might cry on assignments if you don't go

Best professor I have had in terms of clarity and just overall making a complicated subject not only digestible, but also very interesting. He is a sweet sweet man. I often see him meeting with students in Stevenson cafe to talk with students about their papers. Very personable.

Jim has been one of the best professors I've had. There were long, difficult writing assignments every week, but the content was interesting, and the assignments/class broadened my knowledge immensely. Jim was hilarious, enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and just a fantastic professor overall. I definitely want to take another class with him.

James is one of my favorite profs. He is funny, interesting, and all around a cool guy. The class was easy and actually pretty interesting. There are five short response essays (600 words) and two bigger essays maybe 4 pages long. It is super manageable with a busy schedule all you really have to do is read(more like skim over)and go to class

Jim is one of the most intelligent people I've ever met and I feel very fortunate to have taken this class! Also, his office hours are great!

Jim is a wonderful professor! Very funny and super nice. His passion and enthusiasm for teaching makes you stay awake even when the content of lecture gets a bit dull. All readings are online through Ecommons. 5 short writings throughout the quarter and two main essays (one due in week 5 and the other due at final class). Easy g.e. class!

My favorite professor. Extremely engaging. Passionate and humorous. The class is difficult and contains a tremendous amount of work, but this just reflects his high standards for his students (which I believe is the mark of a good professor). If you are a linguistics major, make a point of taking one of his classes.

I love this class! It was really interesting but not gonna lie, it was tough. It depends on the TAs though, because they tend to grade harder than McCloskey! Take notes and read, they're necessary for the 6 essays (no exams). You have 6 essay opportunities and only have to do 5/they drop lowest grade of the 6. But McCloskey is awesome & super irish

Jim is an excellent teacher. His only fault is the beginning of Syntax 2 stays too conceptual for the first week. But when the class gets into actual Syntax, the class soars. Jim facilitates the class very well and his office is very welcoming. The grade is made up entirely of the homeworks and your squib.

Reader is essential to the class and essays, and it is extremely helpful to go to class to get clarification on the reader material. They drop your lowest essay grade. Jim is very approachable, very useful, and very Irish.

Jim is a great guy, and he has fun talking about linguistics. However, I think the class would have been better if it were smaller. Jim likes to run his class with interactive discussion, which can be messy and tedious with a class of 300.
